Kickin' Myself Lyrics

heard your broken voice on the telephone
made my heavy heart sink like a stone
and after all this time, i should have known
you'd let me down
right down to the bone
you know you're right, im incomplete
and i could never write down what i mean
and if you told me that the world, was ending tonight
that's alright by me
hey babe
i feel as though, i failed you
i feel as though, you don't want me
i keep kickin' myself
they say that anything can be replaced
found another girl to pass the days
she is beautiful, she has your face
their is nothing, time will not erase
and hey babe, I feel as though I've lost you
and I feel as though, you dont want me
and I keep kickin' myself
and lately, when i sleep alone
i feel that, i oughta learn
you dont need me
just stop kidding myself

The song is about the regret that the speaker feels after he has broken up with his girlfriend. The song itself is basically broken up into three sections: the actual break up, a while after the break up where the speaker has found another girl, and the last section which is where the speaker realizes that his old girl who he just can't get over doesn't need him.

"i heard your broken voice on the telephone it made my heavy heart sink like a stone and after all this time, i should have known you'd let me down right down to the bone you know you're right, i'm incomplete and i could never write down what i mean oh if you told me that the world was ending tonight well, that's alright by me"

When she tells him that they are breaking up, the speaker says that he expected this to happen. This might mean that he was not dedicated to the relationship because he was always second guessing it. It might be because he has a lack of confidence in himself as a boyfriend, his partner and how she feels about him, their relationship together, or a combination of them all.

"and after all this time, i should have known you'd let me down"

She even tells him that he is "incomplete" and that when they were together, he wasn't able to fully express his feelings towards her because of his lack of confidence or uncertainty.

"you know you're right, im incomplete and i could never write down what i mean"

After she tells him that it's over, nothing else matters to him. This could be because he finally realized what he had with her and he regrets not being fully dedicated to the relationship. However, now that it is over, there is absolutely nothing he can do about it.

"and if you told me that the world, was ending tonight that's alright by me"

Even in the chorus, there is uncertainty. Instead of saying that he "has" failed her, he says that he "feels as though" he has. He keeps kickin' himself because he has that realization of what he had with her. He is full of regret because he missed out on what could have been.

"hey babe i feel as though, i failed you i feel as though, you don't want me and i keep kickin' myself"

This is where the second section of the song begins. The speaker talks about how he has found another girl. However, even as he talks about this new girl, he is comparing her to his old girlfriend. This shows that he still can't get over her and that he is still living with that regret. He also says that he has this girlfriend to "pass the days" which might mean that he doesn't even want to be with her. It's just something he's doing to help him take his mind off of his old girlfriend.

"they say that anything can be replaced i found another girl to pass the days she is beautiful, she has your face there is nothing, time will not erase"

That last line is probably him trying to reason with himself. He is trying to hard to forget about this girl, but he simply can't. he is probably telling himself this line to comfort himself and say that in time, he will be able to forget about her.

"there is nothing, time will not erase"

After the chorus is sung a second time, the song goes into its last section. the speaker begins to realize that this girl obviously doesn't feel the same way about him. he's been thinking about her all this time and about all of his regrets, but she is long gone and has already forgotten about him.

"and lately, when i sleep alone i feel that i oughta learn you dont need me i just stop kidding myself"

Again, there is some uncertainty in these lines when he talks about her not needing him anymore. He says that he "feels" that he "oughta" learn, instead of that he "has" learned. But it is the last line that is most important, i think. He says that "stops kidding" himself instead of saying that he "feels" that he should, like he had before. This might be the most meaningful line in the song because of the fact that he finally gets over her.

I think that he does still regret how his old relationship ended and the choices that he made with her, but he finally realizes that he should move on instead of reminiscing about her. In the end, it does hold true that "there is nothing time will not erase".

Written after watching a Bob Dylan special. To quote Dan, "My attempt at a Bob Dylan song."

Brilliant song.

I agree that the song is about regret, maybe something the other person did, or him, or both.

Hah, it's funny how people respond to such cliché-ic songs. It's a shame I can relate, haha. And I find the meaning completely true. Then again, emotions wasted for someone who doesn't share them, make that person not worth your emotions.

i completely agree you should move on to someone more deserving and appreciative
