The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song isn't about the fucking lord of the rings. If you've ever been deeply in love and gotten ready to or have tied yourself to someone else through marriage you would see that its about marriage. Everyone wants to get married

And he says its his precious because it means a lot. you are giving yourself to that person. This person turned away and left him for a different person so he wants to give the ring to the right person instead of let the other person hold onto it after she's left him.

Seems sgtsledge is the only one with any brains! Haha, just kidding. I honestly can't believe anyone would believe this would be about TLotR, though! I doubt Oomph! is that simpleminded ;)
Anyway, this song seems to be about falling in love with a "player", in my opinion. As sgtsledge has stated, the ring obviously represents marriage, and marriage most usually represents a deep love. Everyone wants the woman he has fallen in love with, because she's so beautiful, but he wants her all for himself. Unfortunately, his love is a total whore and grows tired of him. He sees her with man after man, and it makes him jealous. He believes she should belong to him, and he despises all of those she has been with.
If I were Oomph!, I would write a song about LotR. They're a somewhat playful group, so I wouldn't be surprised. As far as whether it's about that or marriage, it could go either way I guess.

holy shit, is this song seriously about the fucking ring of power?! holy hell, although i have to say i dont expect anything less from a band that gave some inspiration to Rammstein where they also write songs about ridiculous crap. example; the song Zwitter is about someone being transsexual. i think it's Zwitter, it's been awhile since i've read the lyrics.
