"Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

but this song makes me think of someone i got close to recently who means a lot to me, but could only remain a part of my life for a fairly short amount of time... we just got to know each other at a really bad time and the circumstances were all wrong for us. "Where the road is dark and the seed is sowed"... what we did was dark and the seeds we sowed were bad, at least for now... but... maybe during the time we spent together, we sowed seeds that will one day turn into something good?
"Where the miles are marked in the blood and gold" it was bittersweet though. i don't regret a moment of it, even if it was wrong...
"Now I been out in the desert, just doin' my time Searchin' through the dust, lookin' for a sign" this represents how hard it is on me being away from him (almost like doing jailtime) and how i keep looking for reasons why we could/should be together, but there just aren't any logical reasons right now so i refrain. also, looking for signs that he hasn't completely given up on me... but i think he finally has begun to, because of all i've put him through... and searching for signs that he feels something similar for me to what i feel for him
