Lighthouse Lyrics

Take what you need while there's time
The city will be earth in a short while
If I'm not mistaken, it's been in flames
You and I will escape to the seaside

There is a storm in the distance
The wind breathing warning of its imminence
There is a lighthouse, five hundred yards down
You and I will be safe there

There is a girl who haunts that lighthouse
She saved me, I was swimming
So young I almost drowned
Under the water, she sang a story
Of losing her lover, she calls a warning

Love, you are foolish, you're tired
Your sleeplessness makes you a liar
The city is burning
The ocean is turning
Our only chance is the lighthouse

Her lover was a sailor
She went and she waited there
The door locked from the outside
Lover never arrived so she sings there
Soft as a siren, luring the ships off their course
How alarming

We went in, we climbed up and looked out
The door locked from the outside
Three ghosts in a lighthouse

When it says 'the door locked from the outside' I get the impression that her lover locked her in there. So she takes her revenge on the sailors by luring ships of their course. Too depressing?

i was thinking that the two other ghosts were the lovers seeking shelter in the lighthouse and the ghost girl became jealous in seeing that this girl had a love that she had lost so she thought they should suffer in the same way she has

I think some people read into this song way too much. The Hush Sound (THS) has admitted to not really having a clue what they meant by a lot of the songs in Like Vines and So Sudden. They said (and I am paraphrasing) that most of those songs lacked life experiences and were mostly just little whimsical stories. It's what makes most of THS's songs so open to interpretation. There just isn't that much they explicitly mean with their lyrics.

Lighthouse is beautiful because it is a love ballad that is both lovely and haunting. It's just a quirky little romantic story (also quite creepy) that can mean whatever you want it to mean.

i have to dissagree, i think that every song (especially this song) comes from the inside, and always has a special meaning. this song is about a place of disturbance and pain in which these two people are trying to escape from. they basicly run away, but sadly get trapped and need a place of saftey and hope. she remembers a light house neerby and also a haunting goust that once saves her life, and the goust story: had a lover and lover never came back, she now waits for him to return. as they enter the house the door...

I agree, even though others have an interesting interpretation that i can understand and agree on. But i like this idea the best, it's like a conversation between two people, one saying they need to go to the lighthouse and the other saying not to go because of the ghost.

i don't know maybe I don't like reading too much into songs, it gets to complicated :P

My interpretation of this song is that there is only one narrator, not two as previously suggested. The commenter was only picking out parts of the song which suited their theory. The story is a continuous one, throughout we hear more of the story of the girl or a siren, in the lighthouse, this would not make sense as two narrators since it's telling one person's experience being saved by the siren. We don't hear the lovers perspective only that the narrator then calls them a 'liar' and 'foolish'. From what I understand the lover doubts the narrators claims of the city in flames, when doubted the narrator changes their story to a storm now as well.

The siren is calling (or had arranged in their previous meeting) the narrator to bring their lover to the lighthouse, her warning of 'losing a lover'. So the narrator will stay with their love in the lighthouse and not lose them as the siren lost hers.

I like to think of this whole album as a single narrative. Partly taking place in the real world, and partly in a shared dreamscape, between two to three characters struggling with loss and depression. So to me, Lighthouse picks up right where Lion's Roar ends, in that the man searching for the missing girl from Lion's Roar finds her in the circus, tries to free her from it and they start a fire to escape the people chasing them at the end of the song.

Where Lighthouse picks up the story, the Searching Man is the first singer (verses 1, 2, 4), and the second singer (verses 3, 5, 6) is the Missing Girl. He just recently arrived from over sea ("Desperate Search across sea and land" from lion's roar), so he knows about the coming storm, and the girl is from the Burning City or spent time there as a child, so she knows about the ghost in the lighthouse. They go there and die, but not really because all of this was part of the dreamscape.

The Ghost is a previous version of the Missing Girl (Singer #2), from a past relationship that turned toxic (the lover that never returned, is her ex that changed and she never recognized him again). So it's a part of herself that she had to "kill" to move on, or a part of herself that her ex "killed" during the toxic relationship.

The Man wakes up to find he was brought to safety by The Woman. She explains the situation, and decides they should travel to a Lighthouse not too far out of town.

The Woman explains she was saved at the Lighthouse as a child by a ghost who haunts it, a strange Sailor's Widow. The Widow's lover never came back from sea, so she remains there forever, singing to nearby passing ships to lure her love back home.

The Man and Woman get their safely, but upon entrance meet three ghosts.

Not only do they meet three ghosts, but the characters in the story are the three ghosts. *Gasp! I know! :]

I think that the three ghosts are The Man, The Woman, and The Ghost Girl, because "The door locked from the outside", so they're trapped in there.
