It Won't Happen Twice Lyrics
Oh, lightning may strike your poor heart tonight
But it won't happen twice, my friend
And all the love you deserve is coming on stormy winds
And I was jealous and cruel to a young girl I knew
But it wont happen twice, my friend
Oh, if I get the chance I'll be braver like holy wine
And disaster has riddled my body with holes
But it won't happen twice, my friend
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not happen again
And a hurricane blew my bright stars away
But it won't happen twice, my friend.
I'm flat on my back and I'm travelling like dizzy spells
All these inside fires have burned up these outside things
All these inside fires have burned up these outside things
But it won't happen twice, my friend
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not happen again
Oh, it won't happen twice, my friend
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not
Can not happen again
But it won't happen twice, my friend
And all the love you deserve is coming on stormy winds
But it wont happen twice, my friend
Oh, if I get the chance I'll be braver like holy wine
And disaster has riddled my body with holes
But it won't happen twice, my friend
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not happen again
But it won't happen twice, my friend.
I'm flat on my back and I'm travelling like dizzy spells
All these inside fires have burned up these outside things
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not happen again
It won't happen twice, my friend
And I know it because I know it, child
It can not
Can not happen again

fantastic song. i think its fairly safe to say its about the impermanence of bad times/events and how things will get better/change. You'll eventually find love, be braver, and probably just become more experienced in life and not make the same mistakes over again.
I think it also goes beyond that and may have a Gospel message imbedded in the song or at least a testimony of the Gospel message. References to "Stormy Winds" I think points to the Trinity. See Ezekiel 1 and Matthew 26. I also think the chorus, "all these inside fires burned up these outside things" refers to Christ in us redeeming us and as a result we are alive with no need to worry.

Beautiful tune from a great album. M. Ward gives us all hope I think.
