It's been about three weeks now, since I laid in a bed
No rest for my soul I need, A little soul rest for my head
See I've been dancing with possibilities, playing with my razorblade
I lost the thing I though I had, the thing that made me think I had it made

Why are you laying down? I said that it beats standing up
What's got you feeling so down, I hold up my empty cup
My friend, as you can see, I have nothing to pour
Invited in, I gave all I had and they showed me the door
They showed me the door

It seems it's been forever now, I'm giving up on that bed
I ain't got much soul left now, And I don't have that much bread
Seeing that there are no more possibilities, I've tossed away my razor blade
I never had the thing I thought I had, the thing that made me think I had it made
Think I had it made

Why are you laying down? I said that it beats standing up
What's got you feeling so down, I hold up my empty cup
My friend, as you can see, I have nothing to pour
Invited in, I gave all I had and they showed me the door
They showed me the door

This song is about a man suffering through depression three weeks after being kicked out of the house. Now homeless, he is telling his story to us, because he has no money or love from anyone. Then there is a long break in the middle of his overcoming the depression as he accepts his new life. The line "Why are you feeling so down, i HOLD UP MY EMPTY CUP" is about him physically showing how he has nothing now, not even a dollar in his cup.

I don’t know that you need to get to addition to explain this amazing song. Depression, loss, rejection pretty much covers it for me. And I interpret it as a hopeful song. First the music itself is life-affirming and almost triumphant. Yes, life is basic since losing everything, but there’s nowhere to go but up. The fact that he no longer feels the need to “play with his razor blade” signals that. - for me.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
