Me & My Friends Lyrics

me and my friends
we don't encourage discipline
or really much of anything.
we do our drugs 'till we're lit up.
tell ourselves that this is love.
but it's never added up
and it will never be enough.

it's the same corner booth,
the same smith street bar,
the same sour mouths,
and the same empty arms.
forever and ever our lives
on a loop.

it's the same dollar draft,
the same whiskey words,
the same hanging heart,
and the same old scorched earth.
we're further and further
away from the truth.

i wanna stop it.
i wanna stop it.
i wanna stop it.
but it's the only life i know how to live

we make a mess of what matters
give our good grace away
we try to drink the clock backwards
and pretend like nothing’s changed

but you think i’m a liar, but you think i’m a fake
and i think you’re a coward, but it’s not what i say
i call you my brother, and you call me the same

i wanna stop it.
i wanna stop it.
i wanna stop it.
but it's the only life i know how to live

let the smear words spew out of the sides of my mouth
go be my ghost and i’ll got be yours
my brother, pour me one more
yeah tonight brother pour me one
yeah tonight i’ll just cut you one more
yeah tonight i’ll just cut you one more

i think the thing about 'my friends' is a metaphor for alcohol addiction

it's a new one, check it out on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ZKWagfDqI&search=kevin%20devine

took me a while to figure out all the lyrics, not sure if they are all right, but it was worth it. kevin devine is the man. the song seems to basically be about getting older and growing out of the group of friends you've had your whole life. kevin is ready to grow up and move on but doesn't know how.

i know this isnt what the song is about, this is just what i take from it. right now im in a tough spot debating on moving and starting over, or staying here with the only life i've known. this song says to me, if you dont get up and live your life, it'll be the same things ( the same corner booth, the same bar, the same beer, the same people). if you dont take the time to make a postive change you wont be able to "stop it".

i agree with consciouspilot's interpretation of the song...i've been going through sort of the same thing. you get older, you get tired of the same cycles that your long-time friends have been perpetually stuck in since high school; there are times that you can't stand hanging out with those close friends, but you still call them "brother," and they probably feel the same way because you're growing up without them. despite the growing differences, you can't really ever turn your back on them, so you repeat that cycle.

"tonight brother pour me one more. yeah tonight i'll just cut you one more."

it's like he hates the hypocrisy of everything, but he doesn't say anything about it because it's all he's ever known.

lol.. i accidentally copied & pasted the whole song instead of just where he says i wanna stop it and we make a mess of what matters. oh well

this song is pretty self explanitory. last night he said it was about his friends who aren't much of friends anymore and doing drugs and shitty things

"i think the thing about 'my friends' is a metaphor for alcohol addiction"

haha thats reading way too much into it. it really literally means his friends haha.

i think its literally about his friends, or people he called his friends growing up. looking back hes realizing that they were never really true friends and he was just surrounding himself with a bad group of people.
