Everything Had Changed Lyrics

On the path of life, I wish you well
Divergent journeys, but we will meet again in Hell
I kept my head down and moved on
'Til every friend I'd known was gone

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Everything was strange

When in rags and when in wealth
A solemn promise never to give too much of myself
Despite the hopeful words I've said
I've lived my life inside my head

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Everything was strange

I hold my breath and count to ten
I hate it now, hated it then
I've seen it all before
A failure and a bore
But that's what friends are for

So it seems I must have won
As I survey the ashes of the damage that I've done
Everyone I've ever known
Is just as closed off and alone

Then one day, I was not alone
Everything had changed
Everything was strange
Everything had changed
Every thing

Wow, Geckat, maybe I'm way off but I'm pretty much seeing this in the opposite way as you. This song seems to me to be about the redemptive power of love: He's made a giant mess of his life, depressed, alone, closed off, etc.--and then he meets "the one" and everything changes. ("Then one day, I was not alone, everything had changed," etc.)

Without even hearing this song I can tell Steven Page sings it. Guy's a lyrical genius. I swear, this album is gonna be another quad-platinum :) .

As for the meaning...I think it might be something akin to 'I Live With It Every Day'...just depression over what the protagonist has done. I know it's kind of loose, but that's all I can think up right now.

With urgent chariots = divergent journeys

Such an amazing song. Musically it's the most impressive on Barenaked Ladies Are Me - it's just a complete change from lots of what they do. Fantastic to listen to.

It's more as gravity defiant said. Basically the guy shut himself off, burned his bridges, and thought he was alone in some kind of shame. He had these people and he figured it'd be a let-down, so it was in the end and he was proven right, and then suddenly he's proven wrong and he finds that he isn't alone one day, and everything has changed...and it's strange because he's used to the loneliness he made.

Third line should be "I kept my head down and moved on" Third line in second verse: "Despite the hopeful things I've said" Third verse: "I've seen it all before" "But that's what friends are for"

Personally when I hear it I think of me.

Like this: The man is antisocial and then he meets a girl and he doesn't know what to think. He'd always been alone. Also he's hurt others in the past.
