Bitter End Lyrics
The words that you said
They still ring in my head
Don't you know
We say goodbye
With a tear in our eye
Oh, where'd you go
It's alright you can sleep tonight
Knowing you'll always live on in a song
Farewell to old friends
Let's raise a glass to the bitter end
Farewell to old friends
Will you be the same when we see you again
Remember the days
When we'd laugh as you played
Who would have known
The water would come and just take you away
Oh, where'd you go
It's not alright
I can't sleep tonight
Knowing you should have played on
On and on
Farewell to old friends
Let's raise a glass to the bitter end
Farewell to old friends
Will you forgive me when I see you again
You had a good time
Drinking all of our wine
After the show
We all rode the wave
Of that crazy parade
Oh, where'd you go
What happened to
The ones we knew
As long as I'm the shiniest star
Oh, there you are
Farewell to old friends
Let's raise a glass to the bitter end
Farewell to old friends
We'll still be here when you come round again
They still ring in my head
Don't you know
We say goodbye
With a tear in our eye
Oh, where'd you go
Knowing you'll always live on in a song
Let's raise a glass to the bitter end
Farewell to old friends
Will you be the same when we see you again
When we'd laugh as you played
Who would have known
The water would come and just take you away
Oh, where'd you go

Knowing you should have played on

tho I'm not sure who Natalie is referring to in this song "the words that you said they still ring in my head" but when I listen to it I think she's singing it to country radio stations. "farewell to old friends" meaning you loved us at once, but not anymore. and "we'll still be here when you come round again" meaning if country radio ever forgives them and discovers their music is damn good, they'll still be around to be played. I dunno tho...she might be directing it towards a friend or someone who used to play music that died....?
I think it is also about the radio stations and the old fans who stopped supporting the Chicks after Natalie's comment.
"Remember the days When we'd laugh as you played Who would have known The water would come and just take you away Oh, where'd you go"
After natalie made the comment about Bush, it was like a huge wave of backlash towards the Chicks and many people went with the crowd and were taken away into the controversy... the destroying of CDs and effort to get them off the radio
Great song though
for whatever reason, this song made me think of Hurricane Katrina, especially the line
"Who would have known The water would come and just take you away"
I am probably way off, but that is just my take. anyways, it is a beautiful song
I also think this song is directed at the fans who abandoned them after the Bush comment. I hadn't thought about the radio stations, but that certainly fits as well.
I think what I love so much about this song (and the whole album, really) is that the Chicks are holding their heads high. They've managed to convey their regret over what happened without apologizing. They've got nothing to apologize for, yet they still wish things would have gone differently. They're not willing to beg and plead and compromise their principles to get those fairweather fans back, but they'll certainly welcome them back should they change their minds.
I think you guys are right, but I think some of it is in the point of view of the fans.
Do you guys know what she means when she says "It's alright you can sleep tonight Knowing you'll always live on in a song?” Because I thought at first it meant she was talking about a friend who she wrote a song about, and then the friendship ended. But after reading your comments, all the stuff you said makes more sense. But then I do not see where that lyric fits in.
@Johnlennnnon ... Well the event is immortalized in THIS songs and a couple more on the album!! Not Ready to Make Nice talks about the incident too, and maybe another song. But this song, at least, is enough to say that about... But, who knows a song CAN have more than one significance. There's no rule against it. : )

I never fully listened to this album until my friend died. I heard this song and I just bursted out into tears. It reminded me of him
I think this song is about two perpectives: Natalie (and the Chicks) talking to their fans or fan, about what happened with them after Natalie's comments, cause most of their fans abandoned them and their just asking like what happened? where did you go? - "The words that you said/They still ring in my head/Don't you know/We say goodbye/With a tear in our eye/Oh, where'd you go?"... then we have the perspective of a fan who i think is regretting leaving them or at least is kinda apologizing in behalf of the all fan base and saying to the chicks that it's not their fault and they should've continued- "It's not alright I can't sleep tonight/Knowing you should have played on/On and on... this song is absolutely beautiful as all of their songs are, and this is my interpertation of it!
