Just A Habit Lyrics
He's more farce than fodder
He's more of a dog than dogs are
It depends, we're just dots and commas
I'd still say you got one on us
There's not reason for it
Don't despise it and don't adore it
It's just a habit
It's just a habit I formed
This one's a super sonnet
This one's got too much on it
This one's a freak
This one's for free
There's no reason for it
Don't despise and don't adore it
It's just a habit
It's just a habit
He's more of a dog than dogs are
It depends, we're just dots and commas
I'd still say you got one on us
There's not reason for it
Don't despise it and don't adore it
It's just a habit
It's just a habit I formed
This one's got too much on it
This one's a freak
This one's for free
There's no reason for it
Don't despise and don't adore it
It's just a habit
It's just a habit

Agreed. I love the vocals and especially the guitar on this track.
A question regarding the accuracy of the lyrics: I'm not certain, and the lyrics as they are make sense but is he not saying "fodder" rather than "father"?
"He's more farce than fodder" makes sense to me potentially more so than father.
I agree that "fodder" makes more sense.

I also think the third/fourth line makes more sense as:

i think doug just smokes a lot of cigs
Why would you say that? I certainly do not know as I am unaware as to the goings-on in his daily life but I do know that he is a vegetarian and that to me implies he tries to live a rather healthy lifestyle; plus he just doesn't strike me as the type.
Regardless, habits take many different forms, not just in the style of cancer sticks, ya feel me?
there is a modest mouse documentary, and in it doug is smoking a cigarette. I'm dead serious too. don't you think doug martsch is the type of person to let the idea of cigarette smoking get so much in his head that he feels forced to write a song about a silly little habit? I think it's perfectly valid and probably pretty likely. You act like it atrocious that he would write about smoking cigarettes.
Not at all, the fact I referred to them as cancer sticks was meant more as a term of endearment than a judgment on writing a song about cigarette smoking. Regardless, now that you mention the MM documentary (which I have seen multiple times) I do distinctly remember a scene where Doug is being interviewed and is in fact smoking a cig which does suggest that the habit he is referring to in the song could be cigarette smoking. The point I was making was that the habit could be anything and does not specifically have to be about smoking...

The point I was making was that the habit could be anything and does not specifically have to be about smoking cigarettes. It's a valid assumption that the habit he is referring to is smoking but the point I was making was that it could be anything that could manifest as a habit, not necessarily one specific thing. Regardless, given my impression of Doug, I am relatively surprised that he does smoke. Not that I view it in any negative light, not at all; it's simply that he did not strike me as the type.
It was stated in an article I read, I can't exactly remember where it was awhile ago, that Doug had quit smoking over a decade ago. He has come clean with himself, and now maintains a very healthy lifestyle- for his benefit and for that of his son Ben.
