there is a modest mouse documentary, and in it doug is smoking a cigarette. I'm dead serious too. don't you think doug martsch is the type of person to let the idea of cigarette smoking get so much in his head that he feels forced to write a song about a silly little habit? I think it's perfectly valid and probably pretty likely. You act like it atrocious that he would write about smoking cigarettes.
Not at all, the fact I referred to them as cancer sticks was meant more as a term of endearment than a judgment on writing a song about cigarette smoking. Regardless, now that you mention the MM documentary (which I have seen multiple times) I do distinctly remember a scene where Doug is being interviewed and is in fact smoking a cig which does suggest that the habit he is referring to in the song could be cigarette smoking. The point I was making was that the habit could be anything and does not specifically have to be about smoking...

It's a valid assumption that the habit he is referring to is smoking but the point I was making was that it could be anything that could manifest as a habit, not necessarily one specific thing. Regardless, given my impression of Doug, I am relatively surprised that he does smoke. Not that I view it in any negative light, not at all; it's simply that he did not strike me as the type.
