Sometimes I Wish I Was a Pretty Girl Lyrics

Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could wreck myself in the shower
Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could wreck myself in the shower

Been on my own so long
I can't tell right from wrong
Bloody red bats squelching awful
Foaming mutilations in the kiss of death

Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could wreck myself in the shower
Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could wreck myself in the shower

Been on my own all night
I can't tell left from right
Baby come back, give me fever
Cauterize this passion
Wth a blood red kiss

Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could wreck myself in the shower
Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl
So I could stab myself in the shower
Sometimes I wish I was a
So I could

"wreck" is from the live version (on the Gotta Let This Hen Out! LP)

on the original studio track (from I Often Dream of Trains) it goes "so I could..." [Robyn makes a peculiar sort of self-muffling sound] "...myself in the shower."

the effect suggests he's refraining from singing what he's thinking.

he was wondering what it's like to have a clitoris. pulsing "massage" shower heads were becoming commonplace, at the time the song was written.

in contemporary interviews--referring to the all-acoustic recording, which required little collaboration--Robyn remarked on how you can get a "reality check" from fellow human beings. but when isolated, previously hidden peculiarities emerge:

Been on my own so long I can't tell right from wrong...

Oh cmon people, it's a song about masturbation. He wishes he could be a girl, so he could play with himself. and never leave the house. jeez. you people think too much.

Thought that's precisely what I was suggesting, re: shower "massage". Perhaps an anatomical reference was over-the-top, but the aforementioned technique simply wouldn't work unless you're female. Or, um...so I'd assume.

If it appears I have a tendency to over-analyze--well, I can hardly deny it--but anyway, I'd suggest clicking on the link for another of Robyn's works, "Flesh Number One (Beatle Dennis)". mbartels surpasses my wordiest efforts by miles and miles.

Goes beyond skin-riding into a fantasy of possessing a human for suicide? Quite popular and all irony intended I'm sure... (Yes, it's scary.) I wondered about the word choice 'wreck.' #?

I always thought this was a song about sadomasochism. Wreck is a slang term for rough sex.

"Wreck" might be a Brit slang for something (they come up some interesting twists on the language) but when I first heard it I thought "wreck" was rape. Masterbation? I wish I was a pretty girl, so I could 'rape' myself in the shower? Think about it. If you were longing for a pretty girl and all you had was yourself... Say no more!

I humbly suggest that the lyrics go, "Bloody red bats, squelching offal".

Lyric Correction

I'd never thought of it.

Excellent suggestion.

Makes more sense than "awful," not that this would necessarily be a convincing argument in Robyn's case (do we expect he'll be inclined to choose what makes more sense?)

But it's more in keeping with the sort of oozing, slippery, covertly- or blatantly-sexual imagery Robyn favors.

I'm reminded of:

The organism rapes itself And then gives birth upon the shelf And over where the magpie struts A flower billows from my guts
