With our ass in the air and our heads in the ground
There's no sense of dispair, without sight, without sound
We hold our ears and shut our eyes
Distant screams morph into lullabies

We beat indifferent drums
We pound 'til we're numb

We validate, rationalize
Corroborate each others' lies
Pat my back and I'll pat yours
Benevolent conquistadors

Piss down throats, shit in cupped hands
Wipe our asses with all foreign flags

20 feet high, 2 feet thick
Barbed-wire, razor blades
The wall was build to keep them out
While keeping us in goose-step parades

We don't question what we've become
We march to the beat of the same indifferent drum

We're beat until we're numb

I am blown away by the fact that no one has commented on this song. It is one of my favorite tracks off of Wolves in Wolves' Clothing, and one of my favorite NOFX songs. It is about how so many americans turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to all the troubles they know to exist in the world.

Yeah, this song is awesome. I like towards the end, "We beat until we're numb."

Then how it turns into, "We're beat until we're numb." Sorry for the double post.

I think GDMarin has this one down pretty well. At the part about the wall may be a reference to immigration from Mexico.

Great song with great lyrics, especially this part

"Piss down throats, shit in cupped hands Wipe our asses with all foreign flags"

Love that little intro riff, too bad they don't repeat it throughout the song.

I think this song is more personal to Fat Mike and the rest of the band than just an indictment of American indifference to world affairs. After "The Decline,"they claimed that they go on with their lives, they know the truth, but prefer lies, lies are simple, simple is bliss...etc. They are able to escape the feelings of despair by sticking their heads in the ground and patting each others backs.

I think this song is about Feudal China and when it built the Great Wall to keep the Mongolians out. Ancient Chinese often used war drums. You're welcome. :D

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
