Keep It There Lyrics
Got three dollars burning in my pocket, I know I know
Got three dollars burning in my pocket, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Got an old ghost locked in my closet, I know I know
Got an old ghost locked in my closet, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Came down on a bottle rocket
Found my heart right where I locked it
Last night like rain on chalk
It's gone like money in my pocket.
See those stars shining in your eyes and I know I know
See those stars shining in your eyes and I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Came down on a bottle rocket
Found my heart right where I locked it
Last night like rain on chalk
It's gone like money in my pocket.
All my troubles in the rear view mirror, I know I know
All my troubles in the rear view mirror, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep them there.
Got three dollars burning in my pocket, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Got an old ghost locked in my closet, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Found my heart right where I locked it
Last night like rain on chalk
It's gone like money in my pocket.
See those stars shining in your eyes and I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep it there.
Found my heart right where I locked it
Last night like rain on chalk
It's gone like money in my pocket.
All my troubles in the rear view mirror, I know I know
I got, I got, I got to keep them there.

I signed up on SM just so I could say how much I love this song. I bliss out on the harmonies every time. It makes me happy to be alive.
I love this song... It's just beautiful... I think it's about being aware of bad habits, memories, and other insights about yourself, but being unwilling to change them.
i have no clue what this song is about. but i the harmonies are so pretty!
Maybe, though, its about acceptting the things you can't change? Be they good or bad?
I agree with mandapop, I think this song has a lot to do with self-reflection and personal growth.
"Got three dollars burning in my pocket, I know I know, Got three dollars burning in my pocket, I know I know, I got, I got, I got to keep it there."
This part could refer to the way people sometimes spend money when they shouldn't, especially when they're feeling down. The money is burning in their pocket because they want to spend it on something to make themselves feel better, but they know deep down that they shouldn't, that they should "keep it there" in their pocket.
"Got an old ghost locked in my closet, I know I know Got an old ghost locked in my closet, I know I know I got, I got, I got to keep it there."
I think this part has to do with being aware of things in your past that haunt you, the ghosts in your closet, and the deep desire not to let them affect you in the present, to "keep it there" in the closet and move forward.
"Came down on a bottle rocket Found my heart right where I locked it Last night like rain on chalk It's gone like money in my pocket."
I'm not quite sure what "came down on a bottle rocket" means, but I really like the line "found my heart right where I locked it." Getting hurt can make it harder for you to open up to people, hence the locking away of one's heart. I also really like the way giving one's heart away is conveyed in the next lines: "Last night like rain on chalk, it's gone like money in my pocket." The inevitability of rain washing away chalk or of one impulsively spending money makes it seem like as hard as it was, this person wanted to give their heart away; they wanted to form a connection with someone, which makes sense when you consider the next stanza.
"See those stars shining in your eyes and I know I know See those stars shining in your eyes and I know I know I got, I got, I got to keep it there."
After giving away their heart to this new person, the narrator realizes the value of opening up to new people and building new relationships even after getting hurt. They want to keep the stars in this person's eyes; they have a strong desire to make this person happy and keep the relationship alive, because it's helping them grow and move forward from whatever ghost in the closet that's been haunting them all this time.
"All my troubles in the rear view mirror, I know I know All my troubles in the rear view mirror, I know I know I got, I got, I got to keep them there."
I like how this last stanza gives the song a full-circle ending. The narrator is in a much better place now than at the start of the song; their troubles are behind them, and they are committed to keeping it that way. It may have hurt, and it may have taken longer than they wanted it to, but they got through it. For this reason, I always think this song is bittersweet; the guitar strumming and soft piano in the background are easy on the ears, but the words really hit home (at least for me). <3
