Pop Life Lyrics

What's the matter with your life
Is the poverty bringing U down?
Is the mailman jerking U 'round?
Did he put your million dollar check
In someone else's box?

Tell me, what's the matter with your world
Was it a boy when U wanted a girl? (Boy when u wanted a girl)
Don't U know straight hair ain't got no curl (No curl)
Life it ain't real funky
Unless it's got that pop
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can't be on top
But life it ain't real funky
Unless it's got that pop
Dig it

Tell me, what's that underneath your hair?
Is there anybody living there? (Anybody living there)
U can't get over, if U say U just don't care (Don't care)
Show me a boy who stays in school
And I'll show U a boy aware!
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can't be on top
But life it ain't real funky
Unless it's got that pop
Dig it

What U putting in your nose?
Is that where all your money goes (Is that where your money goes)
The river of addiction flows
U think it's hot, but there won't be no water
When the fire blows
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody wants to be on top
But life it ain't real funky
Unless it's got that pop
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can't be on top
But life it ain't real funky
Unless it's got that pop
Dig it

No comments on this song? Lyrics are pretty straight forward, and I love the beat. But I want to know: what is with the break in the song at the end, with the noise etc? Is that supposed to sound like something in particular? I never understood why that is in the song! Otherwise, one of my favorite Prince songs.

@kickstart71 when asked about it on his online forum, Prince responded “Good ? – Me 2 :)” (“good question, me too :)”).

I've heard that the noise at the end is a snippet of a concert from five years earlier when Prince was booed off the stage as the opening act for Rolling Stones. I don't know if it's true, but it would kind of make sense to reuse it in this context - as a way of gloating.

I have not heard it in years. God I miss my turntable. I have the record but nothing to play it on.

This is about how we've all become obsessed with the shallowness of life, the celebrity, the desire for wealth and status instead of focusing on what's important.

"Pop life Everybody needs a thrill Pop life We all got a space to fill Pop life"

Despite having been written 28 years ago, this song still very much resonates with today's culture of celebrity, consumerism and the constant need for some kind of entertainment because we can't entertain ourselves.

"What's the matter with your life Is the poverty bringing you down? Is the mailman jerking you 'round? Did he put your million dollar check In someone else's box?"

Instead we moan and complain about the things we don't have, as if they are owed to us by society.

"Tell me, what's that underneath your hair? Is there anybody living there? (Anybody living there) you can't get over, if you say you just don't care (Don't care)"

These lines, to me, is asking us, are we really thinking about what's going on in the world? Most people say they don't care about politics and important issues that are going on in the world because they can't do anything about it. So instead they focus all their attention on pop culture.

"Show me a boy who stays in school And I'll show you a boy aware!"

This is Prince saying that it's important to educate yourself.

My Interpretation

This song was actually written about Prince's ex, Vanity and her cocaine addiction. Fairly common knowledge, I thought.
