Sleep Lyrics
I know it's late
I shouldn't call at this hour
but yet, my fate
I need lips to devour
my nervous system is shot, alright
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
I know it's late
we've known each other awhile
I can't wait
to see your twisted smile
kindred spirit of candle light
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
and my thought to my saint
I'm so tired but I faint
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me tonight
drown out the machinery in my head
bring your peace of mind to my bed
without sleep there are no dreams
without dreams, we fall apart at the seams
kindred spirit of candle light
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
and my thought to my saint
I'm so tired but I faint
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight
sleep
I shouldn't call at this hour
but yet, my fate
I need lips to devour
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
we've known each other awhile
I can't wait
to see your twisted smile
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
I'm so tired but I faint
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me tonight
bring your peace of mind to my bed
without sleep there are no dreams
without dreams, we fall apart at the seams
I won't sleep unless you
sleep with me tonight
deep with me, tonight
I'm so tired but I faint
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight
sleep with me
sleep with me tonight

i think it could be taken either way. there is no way of telling if the composer intended it to merely be about a lonely girl (i assume gender from the vocals) losing sleep because she wants "the" someone close, or if its a cleverly subtle beating around of the bush to refer to sexual intercourse. even if the later is the meaning, its not the point, it would merely be reasonable to occur with two people who feel like this, to the point of losing sleep in each others absence. i almost think the ambiguous lyrics are intentional, leaving it open for us to decide, and skipping to the point of simple human contact. of not being alone, metaphor or not.
@chickenfarmer095 I think you're the most on target of anyone so far. Most of these siren songs are written like the song equivalent to a lap dance: cooing, less than subtle sexual songs, but Rhys Fulber goes deeper. This song is about two people who are awake when most of us are asleep (kindred spirits of candlelight). The woman begging her friend to come over because she feels safe with him (or her!) When the friend is there, her brain can shut off so she can actually sleep.

Hmm, boyfriend? I'm not so sure, suchahero.
Actually, I don't think they're even dating. Rather, I think -- like the lyrics say -- they've known each other a while, perhaps friends, or would-be lovers where there is much flirtation, but everything is still up for debate -- none have made an overture -- and she's confessing to him the level of her desire and devotion.
"Sleep", in this case, truly means sexual intimacy and is used as a metaphor throughout the song. Clever, too.
Also, "drown out the machinery in my head" is her pleading to dispel with the vagueries and questions. She wants to know if he feels the same; to be rid of the wondering.
She is quite literally saying that her not knowing whether or not her affections are returned are driving her to insomnia. She can't stop thinking of it, can't relax enough to sleep, to dream, and in her dreams, she is with him.
"Without sleep there are no dreams, and without dreams, we fall apart at the seams." This is more reiteration that she must know the answer; it's driving her mad. Does he want her, too? Does he dream of her, need her as she needs, and dreams of him? She knows she can't live in this limbo for long, so this is her plea for peace -- whether or not it turns out as she desires.
"Kindred spirit of candlelight" may hint at her perception that he too lies awake wondering the same. At least, she hopes.
Of course, ideally, she wants to tell him the truth and have him respond in kind so that they will quite literally fall in love and become one in their desire.
I love the depth and also metaphor of Conjure One's work. It's wonderful listening.
I don't hear a lot of metaphor in this. Sounds like a straight up "I need you here with me tonight" sorta song.
Nothing wrong with that. A very awesome and emotive song it is.
I'm not sure if sleep refers to sex in this song. I don't think the problems of nerves being shot, being tired and having no dreams are cured by sex. The tone of the song also suggests fatigue, rather than the yearning for sex.
Instead, I prefer the literal meaning: she needs someone who gives her, for some reason or another, comfort and stability. Instead of acting as a metaphor, the lyrics support the importance of being able to provide these things. It's a counter-argument against a common theme which I see a lot of: that good relationships start off with romance and excitement and become bad relationships when "the fire dies out" and only peace remains. Sure, stasis isn't a good thing, but don't underestimate the importance of the peace that someone else provides. You'll only miss it when it's gone.
It helps me to think about a lot of things, but im not sure what it means.
I think it's about a girl so in love with her boyfriend. She can't sleep unless he is by her side. She just always wants to be around him.
i agree with mindhuntress. at first i thought yeah its pretty blunt...she wants him to sleep with her. but more and more i think, i see it as metaphor.
basically i see it like this. two people who knows each other for awhile. the thought of him keeps her up late at night. i do think that they've been flirting or else why would she have these confusions. why the "machinery in my head"? when she say "sleep with me tonight" well i think she means either or...literally and metaphorically. she also said "bring your peace of mind to my bed". i think she just wants to comfort of knowing that he can belong to her.
totally agree with u mindhuntress.
and it is debatable if it actually says this sleeping should occur in the same bed
The part listed as "and my thought to my saint" is actually supposed to be "and my thoughts seem insane" ~ other than that, the lyrics seem to be correct.
