Sixteen Lyrics

You were sixteen
When you fell in love
All grown up now
Once was enough
To beat the odds one night
Forty east

At the end of the bar were the boys
She orders a drink over the noise
As she pays, She sings in time
I am so unsatisfied

Her lips movin' with the words
Her hips swayin' as she turns
Away from the bar, out of sight
I wish the band would play all night

You were sixteen
When you fell in love
No one told you
It won't be enough
To beat the odds one night
At twenty-two

At the end of the bar were the boys
She orders a drink over the noise
As she pays, she sings in time
I am so unsatisfied.

Her lips movin' with the words,
Her hips swayin' as she turns
Away from the bar, out of sight
I wish the band would play all night.

It should be "I am so unsatisfied" instead of "Someone satisfied" because it's a reference to the Replacements song "Unsatisfied." Top notch tuneage.

That's how I hear it too. Definitely a Replacements reference, and the girl in the song is singing along with the band (The Replacements?) playing "Unstatisfied". Really sets the mood for the song. I also wonder if "Sixteen" is a reference to The Replacements song "Sixteen Blue". That would seem to fit too.

The guitars on the first verse reminds me of Red & Blue Jeans by the Promise Ring. Anyone noticed that?

This song is about his grandmother and grandfather and how they met and fell in love.

In the song "Mom" he mentions "Your mother was 16 when she married the man that she loved".

What do you guys think the "won't be enough to beat the odds one night at 22" bit means?

"I am somewhat satisfied" is how I always heard it.

Lyric Correction

It is "I am so Unsatisfied", a reference to The Replacements song, "Unsatisfied" from their "Let it Be" album.

I believe this song is about The Replacements. The title references "Sixteen Blue" and the line "I am so unstatisfied" references their song "Unstatisfied", both from The Replacements album "Let it Be".

A lot of people think "Let it Be", released in 1984 was The Replacements best album. It was their last on an indie label, and certainly could represent "falling in love" as in the song. Basically 6 years later, the girl in the song would be 22 and The Replacements couldn't "beat the odds" and broke up with much critical acclaim, but not much commercial success.

The Replacements spent a LOT of time in bars. The boys at the end of the bar represent their peers who became successful and famous (REM?). who were way more successful. The girl in the song is kind of hanging back "out of sight", like The Replacements out of the limelight.
