Gotta Have You

I think the blue boat is a reference to the nursery rhyme in the first verse which suggests the child-like innocence and pure quality of the love (definitely in keeping with the Weepies' style). The narrator is trying to make the one she loves mad/jealous, maybe because he hurt her, but she realizes that all she has without him are stimulants/depressants (coffee/whiskey,wine,crying) that aren't really the same. She's gotta have the other person. At the same time, she's new to this love, like a spring chicken, and the chicken also suggests that she's scared/nervous/shy about being too bold. She's apologizing to her lover for wallowing in self-pity rather than just doing it. Her state matches the season "green" like the summer. Through the telescope she sees her fantasy life with this person as it should be, floating off to paradise with everything they need, including the guitar (because who could go anywhere without music, sweet music?). It's unclear though whether she's leaving by herself and only imagining these things. The boat is blue so maybe it's a symbol of her sadness as she floats on without her lover. I don't like that interpretation as much and I see her happily humming a tune, not being sad.

this song is so incredibly.. familiar, if not comforting. it's like an old winter coat that though no longer stylish, is so inviting because of the memories it holds. you find yourself slipping into it like a warm bed. it beckons you to find refuge in it and you do so as you review both the goods and the bads.

did anyone else pick up on the slight stubborness that is just adorable, child-like even. like no matter what is offered to you, you know exactly what you want and you will stop at nothing to have it ((him)).

Heard this song in a Itunes Podcast and loved it! I think it's about a love that though they may get stressed and want to leave at times, they can't get over the fact that they love each other too much to part ways.

I love this song! I also heard on iTunes, but in a playlist. I agree I think this song is about being in love with someone no matter what, but in the end all they want is that person.

I found out about the Weepies through my mom, who found them through an iTunes playlist as well. For me, this song is about trying to get over someone you love, but can't. In the chorus, she uses objects of different types of break up tools to discribe that nothing will help.. Coffee is like the comfort from family and friends.. crying is simply crying, Whiskey is drinking away your sorrows, wine is going out and finding a quick rebound. But none of those help.. she just needs him. I think at the end though, she finally gets him back.. or says she will.. she's looking in the future "telescope" and sees a suitcase and warm coat at the back of a blue boat... so she doesn't need them anymore? I dunno, but I love this song. I know how she feels
