Spelunking Lyrics
The tiny midnight caravan
Made its way across black hills
As I watched from a distance
The slow-going glow
Their wandering, you know
Made me pine
For the lamplight
Where you lie
If I took you darling
To the caverns of me heart
Would you light the lamp, dear?
Would you light the lamp, dear?
I see fish without eyes
Bats with their heads
Hanging down towards the ground
Would you still come around?
Come around
I believe in you
In your honesty and your eyes
Even when I'm sloshing
In the muck of my demise
A large part of me
Is always and forever tied
To the lamplight
Of your eyes, of your eyes
Made its way across black hills
As I watched from a distance
The slow-going glow
Made me pine
For the lamplight
Where you lie
To the caverns of me heart
Would you light the lamp, dear?
Would you light the lamp, dear?
Bats with their heads
Hanging down towards the ground
Would you still come around?
Come around
In your honesty and your eyes
Even when I'm sloshing
In the muck of my demise
Is always and forever tied
To the lamplight
Of your eyes, of your eyes

i adore this song!
It's a very simple easy going song, but there's so much meaning behind it.
It's a lot to do with her fear of commitment, but how she wants to commit because that person has such a big impact on her life. "Their wandering, you know Made me pine For the lamplight Where you lie" This and the verse before it are great in creating that feeling of isolation, as she looks on and sees the light, that represents people and commitment, she's just looking, but she is also yearning for the person when she says "where you lie"
"If I took you darling To the caverns of me heart Would you light the lamp, dear? Would you light the lamp, dear?
I see fish without eyes Bats with their heads Hanging down towards the ground Would you still come around? Come around" These two verses convey her fear of commitment and her hesitation to commit because she questions if the person will be there for her.
"I believe in you In your honesty and your eyes Even when I'm sloshing In the muck of my demise
A large part of me Is always and forever tied To the lamplight Of your eyes, of your eyes "
The last two is just her basically saying that she is scared of commitment, but when she looks at that person, she wants to take that step and commit herself to them because she feels so connected with them
I too adore this song.
I've always loved this song, but it's had more significance of late than ever and I'm totally grateful for it.
Laura Veirs' imagery always takes my breath away.
I think it's about someone who has some terrible secrets, like the "fish without eyes" and the "bats", which are not generally considered nice or good. However, she wonders if the guy will still love her, even if he knew about her. The muck part also fits this interpretation because again, muck has a negative connotation.
This seems to be about confronting depression in a relationship. She realizes that at some points she may fall into a dark period but she is hoping that she can rely on her partner to be there for her - to help her through. It takes a lot to trust someone like that, but she believes in him/her.
