@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
I felt my vocal chords weakening
I felt my concave thoughts
I felt my voluntary blindness
for staring straight into the sun
the romantic air of your eye patch
called me across the room
I clung there and danced with your silent
admired your divine tattoos
we slept in the shadow of a cedar tree
we made love on the rolling tide
we smelled the perfume of the waxing moon
we dreamt of all friendships kind
we touched the blood of the black cat
we pet the mammoth dog of tears
in the flickering light we were laughing:
"necessity conquers fear!"
don't lose yourself
don't let yourself be lost...
dreaming we were stones in black stillness
dreaming of the death of the sun
waking to a world of white blindness
painted eyes of the holy one
the death of the world was upon us
and the discipline of the wind
we see less and less all the time, dear
just look at this mess we are in
don't lose yourself,
don't let yourself be lost!...
staring at the entrance to the mine
I prayed for your wounds to close
tiger ointment and a cosmic collision
and the crucifixion of the rose
don't lose yourself, don't lose yourself...
don't lose yourself,
don't let yourself be lost...
I felt my concave thoughts

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This song is absolutely amazing, I love it.
I love the lyrics to this song! It's is so awesome.
whoa! I love this song. Has anyone here read the book "Blindness"?? I'm pretty sure this song is somewhat based off of it. I mean, it's weird cause some of the lines seem to have nothing to do with it, but there are many that seem to be straight from it. such as "the romantic air of your eyepatch called me across the room" "Neccesity conquers fear" (which i think is a direct quote from the book) "Dreaming we were stones" "waking to a world of white blindness" "painted eyes of the holy one". Sorry, I'm sure this doesn't make any sense if you haven't read the book, but i thought i would point them out. And what an odd day for me to find this song, because it's the release day of the movie Blindness.
I was just reading "Blindness" and came across that passage "Don't lose yourself; don't let yourself be lost" and I thought "That's Laura Veirs!" I looked up the lyrics on here, and discovered that there are WAY too many lyrics that are directly associated with that book to be a coincidence. I just didn't peg HER to be a Saramago fan. Go figure! I'm impressed - a very deep book to conquer, and while the mood of the song doesn't really capture the essence of Saramago, she does capture some great images associated with the novel for sure.
sorry, I had to add this. I was looking through the book(blindness) at quotes i underlined, and i came across this one: "Don’t lose yourself, don’t let yourself be lost, he said, and these were unexpected, enigmatic words that didn’t seem to fit the occasion. "
BAM! Laura Veirs owns, cause she can take something like that book that has a totally different vibe and create something new and almost entirely different from it.
Great find NiQ! I am really curious about that book/movie now!
i wasn't a huge fan of the film, simply because it seemed so much more could have been done with such a thought provoking theme. but i imagine the book was good. i didn't actually know there was one, so thank you for that :) these lyrics are beautiful, though. i think the entire concept is interesting in itself. and though i've never read the book, it seems like she's probably used some of the ideas and such to create her own story.
