awesome song!!! absolutely brilliant! in my opinion it is about a girl that he likes that is in a deep depression and is unable to see the positives. he is asking her to realise that he is there for her and will always be there. he hopes that he can understand what she is going through and help her to overcome this obstacle and "bring her back to life"

In my opinion this song is about a guy who likes a girl who is depressed or something and can't find the words to tell her how he feels. He hopes that if she knows how he feels, she will feel better and not top herself....possibly. I worded that completely wrong but I know what I mean.

Okay, so you can all hate me if you think im wrong, but this is ONE of the meanings i believe....... the guy who' singing is dead or a ghost (not neccessarily Clint, though we love him) and he is trying to tell this girl he has left behind that he loves her, but she cant hear him. So when he says "I’ll just pretend I am always by your side" he means that he is always with her, even if she feels that no-one loves her or she's alone, he will always be there. As for the whole 'Phoenix' thing, when he sings "There’s always something in the way (regret)" he could mean that he's dead, and 'regret' means that he wishes he were alive so that she knew how much he loved her. He wishes he could be alive again, thus the meaning of a phoenix rising form the ashes to live again.
I always thought the person male or female is singing about someone he/she knows that is in a coma. Only becuase the idea of the phoenix is to rise again, 'bring you back to life', 'talking to myself', 'wait of you is so long', 'before you open your eyes', 'always by your side', 'open your eyes because someone loves you', 'if your lost dont ever hide'. all kinda to do with my idea. What yas think?
