Prevent This Tragedy (Demo) Lyrics

Here we are again
with handguns for hearts
They had a master plan.
wanted to tear us apart

Nowhere to fall from all time lows
Nothing to lose, nothing to show for
Everything we ever loved
we'll leave behind

We are the walking dead, we hold this ghost in our arms
We take our daily breath we thank our unlucky stars
Nothing to hold, all hope deleted
Our demise has been completed now

Nowhere left to go but down
The flames of hell they give me hope
I drown
In oceans of this tragic part of town
Where nothing's heard for miles but the sound
Of people wishing they were safely underground

Here we are again, turpentine in our hearts
We watch this candle burn and melt away in the dark

We tried to get by on bread and water
Craving blood poured from the altar now
Not much left to do but drown
In flames of miscommunication down
Then out and off in search of someone proud
To translate what we truly dream about
As we lay in this bed thinking out loud

I first became aware of the “West Memphis Three” via an HBO documentary entitled “Paradise Lost”. It wasn’t until I saw the sequel, “Paradise Lost 2: Revelations” that I had a strong feeling that the accused were innocent. It was also a book by Mara Leveritt entitled, “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three” that made it fairly obvious to me that these three boys couldn’t have committed these horrific crimes. Prevent This Tragedy was, in a way, written from the perspective of death row resident Damien Echols. Although I can’t come close to imagining what life is like for him now, it breaks my heart to think of him or any person doing hard time for crimes they didn’t commit. It is basically a song about alienation that took on new meaning the more we worked on it. I thought about the case quite a lot while writing the lyrics. We couldn’t think of a title for it, so I named it after a T-shirt Thrasher Magazine used to make that had an image of a kid falling out of the back of the family car with a caption that read, “Prevent This Tragedy In Your Famiy”. I always loved that shirt and thought “Prevent This Tragedy” would make an appropriate title and would be a nice little nod to our friends at Thrasher Magazine. -Matt Skiba

When I first heard this song, it was called “Pewk”. The lead was played on guitar until the suggestion was made to use strings and piano. This was another one of the original five songs demoed, and one of my favorite songs on the album. -Derek Grant

I think the demo to this song is great. I prefer the lyrics to the ones that they used in the final version. I love the line:

"We watch this candle burn and melt away in the dark"

It really makes you think about the unending hopelessness that they must feel.

Dude, "pewk" is a song, Derek wrote. "Prevent This Tragedy" was never called "pewk". I don't know where you got that quote from Derek. "Pewk" can actually be downloaded, and is on the making of Crimson for a few seconds somewhere in the video.
