I see this as being about a parent's feelings for their child. I find it to be very comforting, almost maternal. Here is my interpretation.

I will protect you and keep you safe.

"When I turn jet black and you show off your light I live to let you shine I live to let you shine"

When I step back and let you go off on your own (or at the very least, start to explore the world on your own), I want you to be who you are, and be independent and stand on your own two feet.

"But you can skyrocket away from me And never come back if you find another galaxy Far from here with more room to fly Just leave me your stardust to remember you by"

You can go off on your own, if you want to. Just make sure we can stay connected. Last line there can also mean, make sure you make an impact on me that I can remember you by.

Another statement of the desire to protect and nurture. For me, this line of the song makes me feel very safe, like I am wrapped up in someone's arms, trusting them completely (Like a mother)

Again, even though I love you, I want you to grow and be independent.

As stated above, you can be on your own, separate from me, if you want to.

My girlfriend was uhm. She was having a bad day. So I called her, and sang her this song. And she says she thinks of that now whenever she hears it.

She also calls me her star :]

Though secretly she is mine.

And basically I interpret it as, I'm her's. I live to make her happy, to make her talents stand out, and to try and help her do everything she ever dreamed of.

But if she finds someone better. And she decides that they're better for her than I am, and that they would make her happier than I could. Then if she leaves me for them, I would understand.

Because I can't honestly expect her to stay with someone like me. When she's someone like her.

Well uhm, that's my interpretation, molded in to my life. heh n__n;

i love this song so much its one of my favorites. i use to sing this song to a dear dear friend of mine who passed a few years back. and it wasn't until i heard it after his funeral that the meaning of this great song changed completely for me. i felt connected to it on a more personal level. to me, now, this song is talking about finally accepting the loss of a close friend or family member. always loving them for who they were but knowing that they are in a more beautiful peace world, and living on... for them... knowing that that is what they would want for you.

I totally agree with redundant123. My boyfriend passed away on 1-11-11 and an ex of mine had me listen to this song and I teared up so bad that I couldn't speak. It's a beatiful song and I believe its about loving someone so much, and accepting and being happy that they're in a better place. Rest in peace Sean. <3 :')

I think this song is about being completely devoted to someone but knowing that he/she doesn't care for you that much and knowing he/she is going to leave you some day.

This song reminds me of a bright eyes Lyric: "And it all boils down to one quotable phrase 'If you love something, give it away.' "

Very pretty song. If you love someone, then you want them to be happy more than you want yourself to happy. =_
