The Bank and Trust Lyrics
Well, she gets real mean when she's drunk
And she finally fell asleep, and I'm glad
She said, 'The only way you got as far as you did
Is 'cause of me. Your songs suck'
And I'm stuck in this American town
And the streets are full of snow
And the shops are closin' down
And the only friend I had here moved away
Went back to Dallas
Ran out of money
So now the bills have all been paid
And the money's all been saved
You're still as sad as you ever were
Sellin' out
To the man you trust
The next morning, just after dawn
On the side of my bed with just a towel on
She said, 'I'm sorry. I didn't mean it.'
You never do, let's finish what we were working on
So now the bills have all been paid
And the money's all been saved
We're just as bad as we ever were
Sellin' out to the bank and trust
Yeah, the bank and trust
And I met this girl from Montgomery
A twenty six-year-old with a five-year-old baby
Yeah, I had her when I was young
Yeah, her daddy's long gone
But that's all right, Jack
You see, she saved me
It's just that I feel stuck in this American town
I finally got a good job, it'd just be dumb to move now
So some days I can hardly move
Much less move away
So now the bills have all been paid
And the money's all been saved
We're just as bad as we ever were, ever were
Selling out to the bank and trust
Yeah, the man you trust
Yeah, the man you trust
And she finally fell asleep, and I'm glad
She said, 'The only way you got as far as you did
Is 'cause of me. Your songs suck'

None of the songs on this album are about Jenny Lewis. They broke up durring the recording of The Execution of All Things, in March 2002. Idiots take ONE LINE in one song on one album and think it's the meaning behind his entire career since his split with her. You're a bunch of morons.
Jenny's not stupid and neither is Blake. Now shut up and appreciate the song.
this song has to be about blake and jenny's relationship. if you're a rilo kiley fan, you probably read the interview with jenny in this month's 'spin' where ben gibbard and blake both talk about blake and jenny's crazy relationship. who else would he be referring to in this line:
well she gets real mean when she's drunk and she finally fell asleep and I'm glad said "the only way you got as far as you did is cause of me, your songs suck"
i came on here hoping someone else had posted a response, but i guess i'm the first. let me know what you guys think. i love this song, so catchy, i listen to it over and over in the car. obviously there's a lot more meaning to this song but that line about songwriting always catches me, my little sister even asked me about it. well, peace guys, let me know what you think
i think you might be right. but then again who knows. i haven't read the article though. i want it now.
as i said somewhere else in the listings from this (disappointing) record, blake needs to get over all this stuff and move on. otherwise, you can forget about RK ever making another album, especially with jenny doing so well on her own (her album kicks ass on this like Kage kicks ass on Buckethead). blake will never be able to handle it all.
actually, it's starting to piss me off when I read all the overt bitching and whining this guy is doing about her in this record. i mean everybody's got issues with their ex's. I'm sure jenny had more than her share of bs to put up with while dating this guy, but you don't hear her writing lyrics like this or taking shit about him in interviews. in fact, just the opposite. if she is trying to exorcise shit from her relationships in songs, she's doing it in an intelligent, more metaphorical way because she's smart enough to write lyrics that don't sound like some teeange bs!!
sorry for the rant. i just hope people don't start thinkng she's some sort of a diva/bitch just because this guy likes to divulge details of their relationship so obviously in his mediocre songs.
Actually, thoward, Jenny co-wrote this song with Blake, so the details that he divulged were obviously not things that Jenny felt uncomfortable with people knowing.
hey joshin - i got the record via itunes so i don't have liner notes or anything. did you see that she cowrote the song from liner notes or from an interview? just wondering - maybe he just gave her co-write credits 'cause he's quoting her in the song. no big deal. i probably read too much into the whole thing anyway - seems like they're continuning to write new songs for RK as usual. relationships with exes can be really complicated!

hey thoward - in the liner notes of this album, jenny is credited as co-writing this song as well as fireflies in a steel mill with blake.
lets not assume that this song or any of the songs on the album are about Jenny. and everyone can be happy and listen to this cd and rk and be..happy. :)
