Cigarettes and carrot juice
Marijuana and lots of booze
I threw the flower of youth into that stew
The serpent tongues were red and pointy
But they were wearing very cool shoes
Who wouldn't wanna sell their soul?

We waited in line for hours
With VIP passes and bouquets of flowers
To see the brand new siren sing her song
The virgins were then thrown into volcanos
A beating heart was held up in the air (aloft)
And no expense (account) was spared.

Quetzecotal and Busby Berkely
Hanging out over Pasadena with
Rodney on the ROQ and David Byrne
Playing on a flying saucer
Box O'Laffs was supporting Talking Heads
Everyone was high or having a real good time.

Cigarettes And Carrot Juice was the name of the box set of their first 3 albums, and the liner notes say this was kind of the typical young Santa Cruz resident\'s diet. So I think the first verse is basically a really brief summary of their pre-reunion career (the bit about the serpents is probably a sardonic nod to their \"selling out\" and going to a major label). The rest kind of loses me, but Quetzalcoatl was an Aztec god (which probably ties in to the part about human sacrifice), Box O\' Laffs was David Lowery\'s pre-CVB band, I think I\'ve heard of Rodney On The ROQ being a california DJ who got a lot of punk music on the air, and David Byrne is of course the singer for Talking Heads.

"Cigarette's and carrot juice" is also the first line line from the Cracker song Big Dipper (Track 3 on Golden Age). So, I take it those are two things David is a big fan of.

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." -Hunter S. Thompson

David Lowrey tells a story live about Box O'Laffs (pre-CVB) being booked to open a show for the Talking Heads. However, as it got closer to the show date they hadn't heard anything else, so they tried to find the guy, and apparently he was something of a crack head and they were never actually booked for anything.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
