My take on this song is his life currently is shit, he is depressed, nothing is going his way. He has lost his hope, his faith, everything. Yet, he doesn't feel this is what life is. He knows there is more to it than what he has experienced and he wants to look on the bright side that there is more and that he needs to pick himself up and find this bright side of life. He wants to change his life so he can be "full again" not depressed and empty.
My life then, my life now, between a 13 year gap. Where did I go wrong within that time frame? If I got through it then, I'll get through it again. Without help just like before.
to me this song means when everything in your life seems to be going wrong you have to look at the bright side of life to help you make it threw, i dont no if this relates to addiction or maybe just a time when he was really down about something and didnt think there was anywhere to go from there, but being a former addict(thank god I stopped) this song really inspires me to keep going in life and get what i really want instead of just screwing it up.

We as humans often do not see the true beauty in small things, and the bad things we magnify when they should not be.
