Starlite Diner Lyrics

it's midnight
at the starlight diner
you said, "meet me at a quarter to twelve"
now I'm standing in the corner
wishing you was here
in my arms

fare thee well, my old friends
fare thee well

is it possible to love someone too much?
you bet

the drugs are in the safe
and the clothes are on the couch
intertwined
but none of them yours
and none of them mine

so cry, cry like a baby
into an ocean of wishes
but it don't never rain
on a street drenched with
pain and ladies

fare thee well, my old friends
fare thee well

have you ever slept it off to the bones?
haven't woken up at night, my love
and dreamt that you called them all
every person that you can never love

it's a blowout on a birthday cake
and a birthday candle floating on the lake
where are you? it's getting late

now it's midnight
at the starlight diner
you said, "meet me 'bout a quarter to twelve"
and I'm standing in the corner
oh, there you are
there you are
there you are
there you are

I love this song...I think these might be the best lyrics of 2006.

The thing that makes them so great is the way the story unfolds, I think. The way there are the asides, like "fare thee well, my old friends" as if he's so sure everything is going wrong, and yet she's only 15 minutes late...but it's not neurotic, it's calm and resigned. And then at the end she shows up, and it all seems like one of those fleeting thoughts that come when your guard is down.

"it's a blowout on a birthday cake and I'm a birthday candle floating on the lake"

That's some of the best imagery ever.

This song is absolutely beautiful, it's really a shame there's only been 2 comments!

I agree with above, Truley gifted song. One of those that connect on a level I don't even understand. Just brilliant. I wish I knew how it came to be..... but then again how did the oceans get so deep and the space so infinite?

Bravo.... See you all at the starlite diner!

Another mistake in the lyrics above: "none of them are yours and ALL of them are mine"

There's no other musician in this world who has ever released three albums (Cold Roses, JCN en 29) in one year (2005) of such amazing quality. And probably no one ever will.

magnificent

I doubt anyone will ever read this, seeing as the last time someone posted about this song was almost a year ago. I'm a 25 year old "grown" man. This is probably the only song that could make me tear up. It's magnificently airy and neurotically blissful. I remember the very first time I heard this album and song. I had just broken up with my girlfriend of several years, downloaded the advance and was sitting in my apartment in Austin drinking red wine feeling utterly lost and alone.

Though I have a new girlfriend now, and I am very happy in life, I always go to this song when I get a little too high strung, because it reminds me of how easily happiness/success/greatness of any measure can be gone. Fare thee well, my old friend.

Memory

I guess that with all great works of art, and this is unquestionably one, the meaning is in the consumer's interpretation. For me, this song, like many of Ryan's others, is about mourning the loss of his girlfriend to cancer.

Take the lines "the drugs are in the safe" - she doesn't need them any more! "and the clothes are on the couch intertwined, but none of them are your's and all of them are mine" - she doesn't throw clothes on the couch anymore.

"it's a blow out on a birthday cake" - for me...

I took the line

"and the clothes are on the couch intertwined, but none of them are yours and all of them are mine"

to mean she doesn't need him anymore, not she doesn't throw clothes on the couch anymore.

Their time is over, and he's meeting up with her for the last time, on her conditions.

To me, it seems like it's an overreaction to someone being late. He's waiting at the diner for this girl of his, and she's fifteen minutes late. His neuroticism makes him believe that this is the end ... and he builds up all these ideas in his head that he loves her too much, and it's all just a wish floating away.

Oh, nevermind ... there she is.

My Interpretation

This song reminds me of my 21st birthday except he never showed up. This is a song for anyone has ever been stood up or made to wait for some one they love.

i think this song and the one before and the next song have alot to do with eachother. i think he dies at the banquet hall and goes into a dreamlike place to say his last goodbyes at the starlight diner then gets tossed into a hellish purgitory in the sadness. could be?
