To me, it seems like it's an overreaction to someone being late. He's waiting at the diner for this girl of his, and she's fifteen minutes late. His neuroticism makes him believe that this is the end ... and he builds up all these ideas in his head that he loves her too much, and it's all just a wish floating away.
