I love this song...I think these might be the best lyrics of 2006.
The thing that makes them so great is the way the story unfolds, I think. The way there are the asides, like "fare thee well, my old friends" as if he's so sure everything is going wrong, and yet she's only 15 minutes late...but it's not neurotic, it's calm and resigned. And then at the end she shows up, and it all seems like one of those fleeting thoughts that come when your guard is down.
"it's a blowout on a birthday cake
and I'm a birthday candle
floating on the lake"
That's some of the best imagery ever.
This song is absolutely beautiful, it's really a shame there's only been 2 comments!
