I believe this song can envoke amazing feelings! However this a depressing song with a hint of hopoefullness!
Jon uses the nightime to describe his loneliness. At night things are often quiet and it can be a very lonely time. Also at night, the only thing you can see see sometimes are satelittes in the night.

'Cause I'm lost I must confess Throw a lifeline I'm down here drownin' In the deepest part of me" I believe refers to God. And the more I listen the more I feel that he is actually singing this song to God as a plea for help. He needs someone or . . . something in his life to save him! But he is hopeful . . "I need to know you're out there..." I think most people have experienced feelings like this where they are searching for something to save them.
