Spring (English) Lyrics

On a bridge, quite high
A man hold his arms open
There he stands and still hesitates
Right away the people swarm in droves
I won't miss out on it either
I want to see it up close
I get into the first row
And scream

The man wants to climb from the bridge
The people begin to hate
They form a dense crowd
And don't want to let him down
So he climbs back up
And the mob begins to rage
They want his innards
And scream

Jump
Redeem me
Jump
Don't disappoint me
Jump for me
Jump into the light
Jump

Now the man begins to cry
A cloud moves in secret
Asking himself what have I done
in front of the sun, it gets cold
I just wanted to see the view
the people break ranks
and look into the evening sky
And they scream

Jump

They scream
Jump
Redeem me
Jump
Don't disappoint me
Jump for me
Jump into the light
Jump

A cloud moves in secret
in front of the sun, it gets cold
But a thousand suns burn just for you
I creep onto the bridge in secret
and kick him in the back from behind
I redeem him from this shame
and I scream to him

Jump

Jump
Redeem yourself
Jump
Don't disappoint me
Jump for me
Jump
Don't disappoint me

Oh wow, that was a completely different interpretation from mine. I thought the song was more of a commentary on today's society. The man only climbed up on the bridge to see the view, but all the people around him assume that he wants to take his life because they can't imagine why else he would climb up there. They spur him on to jump because of their own thrist for blood and drama. Come to think of it, it's like all those people who watch reality TV because they're entertained by other people's misery and because they want to see what kind of outrageous things are going to happen next.

"Crowd Urged Suicidal Teen To Jump": http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Derby-Police-Criticise-Crowd-Who-Encouraged-Shaun-Dykes-To-Jump-Off-Westfield-Shopping-Centre/Article/200810115110890

This happened after the song was written, but shows how reality is often stranger than fiction, and even Rammstein falls short of actual satire. This song is an accurate depiction of how humans really are.

This song is mostly about society's attitude towards suffering in general and suicidality in particular. "Ich wollte nur (…) in den Abendhimel sehen" ("I only wanted to (…) look in the evening sky)" is a metaphor for "I only wanted to look death in the face". Most people thinking of suicide don't do it, but the thought of doing it is comforting because it reminds them that it could all be over. But people don't like others to show their suffering, even if it's in the form of suicide (even that's a "cry for attention") because they pity them; but they project their pity on others, so they call it "self-pity". Pity isn't the same as compassion. Pity makes you withdraw from the other person so much that, if the suffering is strong enough, you no longer see them as a person at all. Once that's done, once all pity's taken away, the instinct of aggression takes over and you want nothing more than to increase the other's suffering. The other's vulnerability gives them power. The other's suffering gives them satisfaction.

The suffering of clinical depression is the worst kind of mental suffering one can go through except for that of schizophrenia, and is entirely beyond the sufferer's control. The suffering is so strong that one person said it was worse than that of watching his wife die of cancer, and another said he would amputate his arm if that could stop it. Yet people don't understand it, and what's more, they don't want to understand it.

Fascinating.

Similar to the article you posted, have you people seen the documentary called "The Bridge"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_(2006_documentary_film)

"The Bridge is a 2006 documentary film... that consists of the results of one year's filming of the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004, which captured a number of suicides"

"The camera crew consisted of 12 people that showed up each morning for an entire year to film the bridge. During filming, on average, one person jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge every 15 days".

Essentially, the Documentary was created to help raise awareness...

This could also be about someone suffering from schizophrenia. "Die Menschen" could also be interpreted as "the voices", people with schizophrenia believe the voices they are hearing are actual people speaking. Unfortunately it is a serious condition where a significant minority actually do "spring" to their deaths.

My Interpretation

I´ve just listened to a very small part of this song, and I think this may be my favorite of this album. I think it´s about when you feel on the edge, when it´s dark and you´re not at all what people expect from you. When everyone wants to take you down. I don´t know... think i´m totally wrong.

I can imagine a crowd of people at this 'bridge' and during the chorus, i can imagine them all shouting "spring!" all at the same time, either expressionless ordoign a weird sort of arm gesture (like when cheering someone on you know? "punching the air aboce you") and the whisperings of TIll is the best part when he says "heimlich ..... Wolke"

It felt to me that this song is about Till and his mixed feelings about writing music for his own enjoyment versus writing/performing music for his audience. Maybe Till feels as though we want him to do something as crazy as jumping from atop a bridge?

One of the creepiest Rammstein songs, IMO. It seems to be both a literal story and a metaphor for society's growing obsession with death as entertainment, as paphan has already mentioned.

Well how about: the man is Jesus.. humanity is asking for him to die in order to 'redeem' them? 'Jump into the light' - something like 'die, go to heaven and save us'. He starts having second thoughts - like the bible says - the human part of Jesus is afraid, wants to go back, but still he has to die so people sentence him to death. (..I'm not religious)
