This part, in particular, is explaining how the one he loves watches as his life crumbles and he loses the one he loves. Yet, he will be there for her and he can't stand the fact that he can't be with her and that the one he loved isn't with him anymore.

I LOVE that line.
I love this song 'cause at one point I could relate to it. Its unrequited love. The hole blackened with lies must have been a lot of lying/not expressing what one really had in mind/making up stuff/cheating etc.
