In A Manner Of Speaking Lyrics

In a manner of speaking
I just want to say
That I could never forget the way
You told me everything
By saying nothing

In a manner of speaking
I don't understand
How love in silence becomes reprimand
But the way that i feel about you
Is beyond words

O give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me nothing
O give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me everything

In a manner of speaking
Semantics won't do
In this life that we live we live we only make do
And the way that we feel
Might have to be sacrified

So in a manner of speaking
I just want to say
That just like you I should find a way
To tell you everything
By saying nothing.

O give me the words
Give me the words
That tell me nothing
O give me the words
Give me the words
Give me the words

I think this song talks about how it's difficult to express your feelings or have others express theirs in certain delicate situations.

you told me everything by saying nothing... the way I feel about you is beyond words... oh give me the words that tell me nothing... deep down I must find a way to tell you everything by saying nothing...

I met my former lover from years ago, and it all came back to me. but it was hard to have the guts to tell him anything. and he was so quiet that I just wanted to shout: ohhh... give me the words! (...that I want to hear). "the way I feel about" him "is beyond words" but I finally mumbled something about out past, only to have silence back. I know he was shocked. but by being silent, I felt he didn't give me the words... now I am just trying to tell him everything by hinting and "saying nothing". "giving him the words" although I am not getting them from him. it seems in a manner of speaking, "semantics won't do" with me and him.

Memory

@indstrlgal This song hits me in the feels, as it reminds me of a one in a million woman I once knew. The chemistry and conversations flowed like molting lava serendipitously. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

I think this song is actually about words. Sometimes when you want an answer, the lack of words, the silence itself is actually the answer. Sometimes more is said with silence. Also when he says "how love in silence becomes reprimand" I mean he wants to say how when there's too much silence in love, it's a sign something is wrong. Also we cannot always express our feelings using words, we feel so much more than we can express. It's a song about how the impossibilty to use language sometimes says it all, and sometimes words alone mean nothing,

It's a though i had.. The word reprimand makes me believe it talks about parents. "the way You told me everything By saying nothing" for me it's just the way some parents act. For me that's the explanation of the relationship of parents and child (even more about grown up ones). You have to deal with each other no matter what, cause you are close in life. But deep inside you see the love. It's a love and a warmth that tells everything by saying nothing. And i guess the one who wrote these lyrics maybe talks about a loss of a parent, and now can't find words to say anything cause parent is gone. So, in a manner of speaking, the way that we feel might have to be sacrified cause there's no way telling feelings to a dead cause its too late.

I think this lyrics only takes sense to me if the writer, Winston tong is gay and he was in love with another boy, but the other boy (or himself, or both) was closeted or bisexual and not openly or exclusively gay.

''In a manner of speaking I don't understand How love in silence becomes reprimand But the way that i feel about you Is beyond words'' ''In this life that we live we live we only make do And the way that we feel Might have to be sacrified''

Or the writer talks about a forbidden or platonic love ''So in a manner of speaking I just want to say That just like you I should find a way To tell you everything By saying nothing'' If this interpretation is true, the meaning changes a little, and becomes more universal than talk about a gay love, he can talks about a platonic relationship with a man or a woman indistinctly.
