I think this lyrics only takes sense to me if the writer, Winston tong is gay and he was in love with another boy, but the other boy (or himself, or both) was closeted or bisexual and not openly or exclusively gay.

''In a manner of speaking I don't understand How love in silence becomes reprimand But the way that i feel about you Is beyond words'' ''In this life that we live we live we only make do And the way that we feel Might have to be sacrified''

Or the writer talks about a forbidden or platonic love ''So in a manner of speaking I just want to say That just like you I should find a way To tell you everything By saying nothing'' If this interpretation is true, the meaning changes a little, and becomes more universal than talk about a gay love, he can talks about a platonic relationship with a man or a woman indistinctly.
