7/4 (Shoreline) Lyrics
it's a shoreline
it's high speed
its a cruel world
and it's time
and you want to get away
oh where to go to
when you want to get it out
oh how to get through
if you want to get it all
you can own what you choose
and you want to live a lie
and love what you lose
it's a shoreline
it's high speed
its a cruel world
and it's time
And you're walking away
And you try to get through
but youve got another life
from the lies they told you
and you try to do it right,
and they all will see you
if you try to steal the beat ohh
the beat will steal you
its coming
its coming in hard
it's high speed
its a cruel world
and it's time
oh where to go to
when you want to get it out
oh how to get through
if you want to get it all
you can own what you choose
and you want to live a lie
and love what you lose
it's high speed
its a cruel world
and it's time
And you try to get through
but youve got another life
from the lies they told you
and you try to do it right,
and they all will see you
if you try to steal the beat ohh
the beat will steal you
its coming in hard

I'd like to point out that one of the things contributing to 7/4 (Shoreline)'s distinctive feel is that the song is played in 7/4 time (7 beats to a measure). They found such a wonderful groove using this uncommon time signature -- and they pay tribute to that not just in the title, but also in the line about trying to "steal the beat", which is kind of what happens in 7/4 time.
"But youve got another life From the lies they told you"
To me, this song sounds like an internal as well as an external struggle. What I take from these lines is that one has to be active in defining oneself against the backdrop of social pressures. The most insidious are those who love us...as related in "It's all Gonna Break". I cannot look around at this world and recognize ANY moral authority that is both legitimate and qualified to set such an example that I would surrender my personal soveriegnty to follow. It's so important to distinguish the lies that others tell you from the lies that people tell themselves. Peace.
This song is about our lives. How some people live in a double standard. You love one sort of life or lifestyle but you must sacrifice it for another life expected of you. It is a tough decision too make and you feel very pressured emotionally due to time constraints, as the song hints, and "it's time" to make that decision.
I wonder if this applies to the whole band in general. I mean, they were all struggling musicians/singers/performers/music producers. It is likely that many of them felt pressured to leave their respective roles to live a more conventional life- getting into a more profitable career, buying a house, settling down with a life partner, raising a family, etc.

I think this song is about finally taking the steps to face your problems, and the real world head on. The shoreline represents the harsh realities (hence 'its a cruel world') staying out at sea, your living a lie. One needs to be at the shore for something concrete aswell. I could see it being about someone who lives a superficial life, loosing themselves in partying or an addiction, but they've gotta face the harsh real world, and when it happens it comes up fast, and its really hard to deal with but its better than the alternative, which is living in a sea of lies.
This is an amazing song, I just discovered it recently and I cant stop listening to it.
Forgive me for not being very eloquent, but THIS. SONG. IS. AMAZING!!

That's really cool, kirlen. I don't know anything about music in that sense so it's always amazing to hear about it. Anyhow, I love this song a lot.
