"What Else Is There?" as written by Horst Schlämmer, Angelo Merten, Karin Elizabeth Dreijer Andersson, Olof Bjorn Dreijer, Svein Berge, Torbjorn Brundtland, Roger John Reginald Greenaway, Tony Macaulay....
It was me on that road
But you couldn't see me
Too many lights out, but nowhere near here

It was me on that road
Still you couldn't see me
And then flashlights and explosions

Roads ends getting nearer
We cover distance but not together
I am the storm and I am the wonder
And the flashlights, nightmares
And sudden explosions

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

It's about you and the sun
A morning run
The story of my maker
What have I and what I ache for

I've got a golden ear
I cut and I spear
And what else is there
Roads and getting nearer
We cover distance still not together

If I am the storm if I am the wonder
Will I have flashlights, nightmares
And sudden explosions

There is no room where I can go and
You've got secrets too

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

My InterpretationIf you think of the girl in this song as Death, that is who she is, and she is singing from Death's perspective. It's about who she is, how she got to be Death and what she does.

General CommentIt should be "Roads END getting nearer".

The voice is from nordic neighbour Karin Dreijer from the Knife, go ahead and listen to them and their new album, they rock!

For me it sounds like she was killed in a car accident.

"It was me on that road
    But you couldn't see me
Too many lights on, but nowhere near here

It was me on that road
    Still you couldn't see me
    And then flashligths and explosions"

Sounds a lot like a car accident to me.

    "Roads and getting nearer
We cover distance but not together"

They are almost home both of them, she is walking (running?) and the other one is driving whe the accident occurs.

"I am the storm and i am the wonder
    And the flashlights, nigthmares
    And sudden explosions

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish"

She got one wish after death, and she chose to come back as a miracle to haunt the driver with of the memories of the accident.

Or was it to come back and finish the morning run? Someone fill me in :)

The video seems o support my idea. But a lot is unclear. The woman at the table, she is Karin, the singer.

General Commenti don't think you're right.

i think it's about life and its sense, about where you come from and where you go after it.

street is a synonym for life, continouity, WAY, the way of life. i think.

It was me on that road
    But you couldn't see me
Too many lights on, but nowhere near here

people are alone, even if there are many things to see and to do. they all have to do the same: follow the road, but they cannot come together.

loneliness compared with flashlights, explosions, nightmares etc...
these are some events life causes: people you meet, impressions you get (maybe war or death) or... whatever.

    Roads end getting nearer
We cover distance but not together
I am the storm and i am the wonder
    And the flashlights, nigthmares
    And sudden explosions

i have been to a planetarium some weeks ago. astronomers follow the opinion that people are stars.
i mean, human beeing is the same like a star. don't know the english words but the physical materials are nearly the same.

so the narrator is part of the hole thing: the world, the universe, life.
and all this sounds to me like she's got no security. she feels alone and strange. doesn't know why she is there and what she's got to do.

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

    and this is:

It's about you and the sun
    A morning run
    The story of my maker
What i have and what i ache for

    very idealistic image!
she yearns for someone who can give her answers.
    (my maker= god???)
who can explain her own being.
    she yearns for answers.
because these things are not enough:

    I've got a golden ear
    I cut an i spear
And what else is there ???

i think this line completes my view:

There is no room i can go and
    You've got secrets too

every being is on its own, no one is responsible for others.

    independence becomes loneliness
    independence becomes ignorance
    independence becomes fear

i could better explain it in german, hope you understand even so.

General CommentAbout 8 years ago I fell in love with a wonderful woman. We dated a couple of months, then she left me, ostensibly because she was moving. I was very hurt, but I managed to stay friends and keep in touch with her as she moved about the world and across several continents. Sometimes it was hard to stay friends with someone who meant so much to me, from whom I wanted so much more, but I managed, though there were years when we barely exchanged a word.

Last night she confessed her undying love for me - by email, as she's still on another continent. I'm emerging from a long-term relationship, so she now felt she could express her feelings without ruining my relationship. She didn't expect them to be reciprocated, we both had no idea the other was still deeply in love with one another.

Many, many emails later, she sent me a reference to this song and told me to pay close attention to the lyrics.

So I tend to favour the interpretation where it's about two people who loved one another but have been on different paths, that are now converging.

I'm sure that's not the only meaning to be teased from these lyrics, and I don't think it's the one the video chose to explore. But I'm sure that's the meaning my darling drew from the song.

Song MeaningThere are more interpretations right, but non of them where finished or there are holes in there story

This song is about dissicions of a sad mid-life-crissed woman who looks back at the moment of her big-love-of-the-past and life. The clip is all about emotions you cant share and de lycris is the story behind that. Its about constant pressure and anxiety in life but no one to turn to.
So the video clip is shaped by the womans emotions and the lycris is the story behind that feelings. It is in a dream-state becaus dreams are reality of emotionel expressions(=explosion) of thinks we asking are self in real life this dream (= "nightmare") is a deriorating relationship. A well knowin love story:

    Main story:
The road of life(=light, seeing or knowing where to go in life) together into the dark (dark=whitout knowing where to go in life(=light))
She just wants his attention, because she feels ignored (=look for the man on the road, even the dog(moste love giving creatures)

"I've got a golden ear, I cut and I spear"
The only thing left for her(=because anxiety) asking for more attention through the wrong way (saying spiteful, jealousy, etc)
So she has just "given one wish" be him, a wish of basic trust. To be with a man she cannot have annymore.

"It's about you and the sun, A morning run"
A reference to HIM (sun=light in here life).
"I don't know what more to ask for"
"The story of my maker, what I have and what I ache for"
He is the maker, he is shaping her live in different ways.
He knows he has potential to succeed this relation, knowledge to pursue a further understanding of the logical side of the outsiders perspective, but his intuition is consuming his mind. An unforeseen future clouds his thoughts. He aches for an answer and cries out, "What else is there?"
But there is no apparent answer. Only a void that plays with his emotions.(=exploisions)

So the outsiders bring only more suffering, because they only projecting all of the problems of their own lives. Their good memories are clouded by memories of a bad experience of their own.
She becomes jealous because he listning more to the outsiders(=people that brings light into the dark besides her own) then her.
They've drifted apart (=houses floating away) and taking slowly different roads.
"Road's end getting nearer We cover distance, but not together"

You see a floating-state-of-mind (=unwilling freedom, pressure, anxiety),
where she tries to toughing the ground (=touching tree in clip), meaning get her shit together.
When she tough the ground she takes a good look at herself and snaps.
    Moments later there is a moment-of-clearity;
She is the storm, the wonder of nature that would burst out all of her emotions (=explosions),
not because see realist her wrong doing in the past(=nightmare),
but because her life is decayed(=X) by asking the same question (=reference to "why"=the last lycris) as he did: "What else is there?"

    - The fruit is molding
    - she is spilling her milk (losing her ability to bear children)
    - smoking mushrooms(=translation of royksopp) on the tree (Using drugs)

"There's no room where I can go and, You've got secrets too"
She has drivin herself years in isolation (=blanket=feeling of closure) as a spinster
In the video jou see the puritan collar(English Protestant from the 16th and 17th centurie) of celibacy around her nek when see sitting on the table.

    So the main life-lesson is:
Dont compare the bad moments of your life. Dont think of the future.
Live in the moment, trust your own feelings. Just jump together into the dark!!

General CommentI can see how this might be about a car accident, but instead of her being killed by the accident, it seems like it was her car that killed someone. *she* is the sudden explosion and the nightmare, and - not to be too gory but - she cuts and spears. Even if this is about something so horrible, this might be one of the most amazing songs I've heard... ever.

General CommentI never would have figured it out myself, but I agree this is about an accident. "A morning run" - she was going for a run in the morning while it was still dark. I think the milk in the video is just symbolic of blood. I wonder if her wish was to meet the person that hit her, and that was the woman at the table. "You've got secrets too" - maybe it was a hit and run? It sounds to me like the whole song is her talking to her killer, and now that she's met that person she doesn't know what else to do or say.

I'm wondering what does the "golden ear" mean? Is that line correct?

General CommentBalisongabraxas: I think "golden ear" is a synonym of her golden ability of listening.
she listens to what she is being taught and told,
    but what else is there?
Isn't there any more then what people on earth can teach us? Is it worth it to listen?
there's more for us out there to learn that can't be explained in human terms.
