since this is a christian band this song is about God, but in a different way, its like its God from God's point of view, he wants to help us, but we choose to try things on our own, instead of asking for his help, but since we choose not to listen to him, it hurts him watch us suffer from our consequences... he wants to help us, but if we dont let him in, there is nothing he can do for us...

I got a dizzy flash and felt like a truck went right through me when I heard this song...when you have been through the experience, this song just tears you down so badly...

To me, this song is about how sin can tear you apart from the ones you love, especially sinful addictions..I speak all this from my life.

In the first verse, the "undertow" is your sin, your addiction that separates you from the one you love. The undertow is an underlying force that is in opposition to the apparent force...it perfectly describes how your sin or inner conflict can creep into the center of your life so stealthily. As for the gun, it symbolizes how incredibly easy it is to destroy things...it just takes a bullet and a working finger. Your sin starts out as a simple thorn, but if you let it slide to much, it will grown into something capable of much more destruction, like a gun. Your sin or problem has the ability to wreck your life or the relationship that you have or want with someone, or in my case, this one girl...

The other verse now. The itch is also your small little sin..you know you shouldn't scratch it because it will get bigger and worsen over time, but it gives you a good feeling temporarily for the time that you are scratching it..

"Wash it off, take the loss, let it go." After you do this sin, you realize it was wrong, so you just accept that you have sinned "take the loss", decide to have a new start and not sin anymore "let it go", and ask forgiveness from God "wash it off"...only to do it again...

As for the rest of the song, it's pretty self explanatory..when I do this sin, the circumstances it puts me in separates me from the girl I love..I can't be there for her because I'm obssessed with this problem...

"And it hurts when you're lonely and I'm standing right beside you there And it hurt when you told me that you'll try this on your own"

Personally, my favorite lines. Some lyrics I have read read as "And it hurt when you told me that YOU'D TRIED this on your own". When it reads this way, it's so powerful. Like instead of asking me to help her through something she was facing, she didn't let me know about it and faced it alone, then 5 months later she told me about the problem she faced...it makes me feel like she didn't trust me enough, or we weren't as close as I wished we were...

"Hope you never hurt Hope you never cry Hope you never lose your way tonight Hope you never crumble Hope you never fall Hope you never throw away it..."

For that last line, I hear it more like "Hope you never throw away - " Then he's cut off, like he was about to say something important, like he hopes she never throws away the weakening relationship between them..

"It hurts when you can't see and it hurts"

I hear: "it hurts when you can't see - ..." Like he's not going to say that missing phrase...and he just says "it hurts...i hear: "it hurts when you can't see that I love you, so much..."

It absolutely amazed me that there was a band with lyrics so powerful...i love TFK!!!

This is my own meaning, and it came from my own life experience..if someone else if facing the same problem that I am, I know that they see this song the same way..

The guitar on this song is amazing. Its really cool when the piano comes in too. I thought it was kinda weird the first time i hears it but now i love it.

I love how in the verses there's such a dark essence about it..lol Trevor Mcnevan is TOTALLY awesom and when he performs this song live..its amazing how his eyes and facial expression, look completely dark and deep and focussed..i love this song

Personally i think this song could be about the singers friend/loved one who could have depression or something, and their friends needs them there with them but because the depression is so overpowering nothing the singer can do can really help and it hurts

I agree with 'shawneeeee' but maybe it has something to do with a guy who's in love with a girl and the girl has a huge depression and nothing, not even love can heal the wound. Or vice versa Maybe? I like to really listen to the lyrics, see underneath them. See if there are any secret meanings, but who knows I might be wrong, the only one who really knows is the singer or the one who wrote the lyrics...

I have been a TFK fan for a few years now, and i just recently stumbled upon this song a few months back. The vocals in it really turned my head. If you ask me, the song is obviously about a close friend losing the battle with depression. The lines about the gun inside and dropping the ball i interpret as a ticking time bomb inside the persons mind and soul that finally just goes off. Everyone handles things differently and I believe that every person has something inside them that will finally trigger that type of sadness and fear. And the leadsinger is trying his best to be there for his friend, but a person who is deeply depressed is really hard to help. This song is about the hurt both people in a friendship go through when one of them is depressed. If you listen to the angst in his voice and read the lyrics closely i think this message will become more apparent to you.

thought that possibly this song could be About how everyone can hurt inside, but some people are more prone to it than others, you need to support people who are more subceptable to depression, it may pain you to watch them hurt, but support always helps.
