After hearing this song numerous times.. I picked up on a few things.. in one instance I thought it may be sung as a duet between two quarrelling lovers. One of them is passive aggressive and making an excuse for giving the other the silent treatment. Then another angle I picked up on was he's on the defensive for being at a loss for words on how he feels and pleading for words to "borrow" just to appease the lovers demands for words. Equip me with useless words (sarcasm) give me a bunch of words that still don't really express an iota of what I feel. Or Give me the damn words that tell u everything you want to hear just to appease the demands. I gotta figure out a way to Express myself about everything wordless.
I'm not quite sure, but I think that this song has a similar meaning to "Enjoy The Silence". Being at that point in a relationship where words are no longer necessary to communicate feelings between a couple. The love between them is so deep that to put it in words almost undermines what they're feeling, as no words can really do it justice.
Add to it that Martin did the Counterfeit ep right before Violator. I think he may have had the theme of this song in mind when writing "Enjoy The Silence", as this song is a cover and not written by him.
