The Darkest Nights Lyrics
for so long i have felt alone
content to live with unrest
longing faded into countless nights
that buried my weary heart
but You brought an end
to this head hour
and meaning to a calloused life
held in Your arms
but too far from my heart
these thoughts will carry me through
the darkest nights
while Your eyes rest in mine
i remember the way You looked at me
and the way You drew me close
with one deep sigh
scattering pieces of my restless mind
forgetting all that we have left behind
content to live with unrest
longing faded into countless nights
that buried my weary heart
but You brought an end
to this head hour
and meaning to a calloused life
held in Your arms
but too far from my heart
these thoughts will carry me through
the darkest nights
while Your eyes rest in mine
i remember the way You looked at me
and the way You drew me close
with one deep sigh
scattering pieces of my restless mind
forgetting all that we have left behind

"these thoughts will carry me through the darkest nights while Your eyes rest in mine"
This section clearly shows this song's meaning. It refers to a memory that pushes the boundaries of human survival. When someone's enduring a hard time in their life, holding onto happy memories boosts their moral and allows them to accomplish feats they didn't know they could overcome. The memory can be a girlfriend, God, or any other important figure or event in your life.
Once again,AILD are NOT a Christian band. They are five Christians who play in a band, which influences their music.
Wow, just wow. This song is about God? This is just another case of "As I Lay Dying is christian so this song has to be about God". What about the whole "While your eyes rest in mine" line in the chorus? If it's about God, seems like Tim has some rather deep feeling for God (in a Faith + 1 way). It's about a chick (or his wife).
"You brought an end to this head hour and meaning to a calloused life held in Your arms but too far from my heart these thoughts will carry me through the darkest nights while Your eyes rest in mine i remember the way You looked at me and the way You drew me close with one deep sigh" - This whole part describes how my girlfriend brought happiness into my life no matter of wat bad things have happened just by looking in her eyes......
this song is about God, see how he says "You" and "Your" the Y is capitalized which shows that he is referring to God. Amazing song.
Actually, to be technical, "you" is capitalized if it is referencing any specific person who remains otherwise unnamed. You isn't a pronoun in this context because there is no name given for "you", and he doesn't mean you literally as you (as in the person readin/listening). But I'm guessing Tim Lambesis isn't an English major either, so it could very well be about god anyway.

I don't know about the whole God thing...It could be capitalized because it's a specific person..I just don't think he'd say some of those things about God...It sounds more like a girlfriend or something...Like "While your eyes rest in mine" and "the way you drew me close"...It sounds like a female to me...If it was God, it would seem a bit awkward with the staring like lovers at eachother...
I think it could go either way. He could mean it like he is putting god close to his heart and kind of enfolded in his spirituality. The capital Y doesn't really explain much, because Tim capitalizes "you" every time he writes it. It could just be bad grammar, but I sort of doubt that.

P.S. Lambesis purposely waters down the religiousness of his lyrics to make them more universal. You never know if he is writing about his faith or about his life and he does it on purpose. I personally like it because I'm not a very religious person and it makes the lyrics mean something more to me than if it was just the kind of crap some of the less talented christian lyricists come up with. Tim is probably my favorite lyricist.

I really think it's about God. After all, As I Lay Dying is a Christian band.

Would a girl really give you "meaning to life"? I don't think so. This song is about how he is caught in the darkness of earthly life and discovers a refuge through God. The reason the lyrics are written the way they are is because the lyricist has discovered that the love of God is greater than all else. Looking at him and drawing his close are symbols that represent simply growing in his relationship....

If you are not a very religious person, being a strong Christian, I'd be very happy to share some of my thoughts with you. Looking at As I Lay Dying's lyrics is actually a decent start.

If that's the way you feel about God, then you misunderstand the relationship of Savior and Sinner.

It's a friendship. Christianity is a friendship with Christ, a friendship with a living savior. It's not just a type of thing that we say "Hai, gimm3 st00fz pl0x?" when we need something, it's a true friendship. Christ walked around with the apostles, correct? He didn't go around commanding people to glorify Him-He came to SERVE others. He came to BEFRIEND those who were lost, to SHOW them HOPE.

God is a FRIEND. There are a couple of different meanings to most sentences-God WANTS to draw us close to His FRIENDSHIP.
Yeah, hrvster of sorrw's right. It's gotta be about a chick. I love this album!!!
Whether it's God or a girl, it's about someone helping get through hard times which is a pretty cool message with a song so awesomely played. I especially love the beginning of the song, it's so badass. We are so grateful of you, As I Lay Dying.
