Lounge Lyrics

i don't care that flowers grow for you and me
and me
you don't know what love is til you see
her standing there
a web of skin and nails and hair
a web of skin and nails and hair and bones and bones and
thoughts rushing in and out your head
you think you are alive
but you are dead
you keep on driving in your car asleep
on driving in your car
i don't know why flowers grow in wintertime
the sky turns grey
the sun don't shine
and people rush to be on time for work
they wrap themselves in wool and cloaks and hats and scarves
like larva in their incubate cars
like larva in their cars
and drive
and drive
and drive
and drive
and drive
and drive
and drive
until they get away

when i first heard "you don't know what love is til you see her standing there a web of skin and nails and hair a web of skin and nails and hair and bones and bones and thoughts"

i automatically thought of a law in the old testament. it said that if a man wished to marry a female prisoner of war, he had to have her go for a month without cutting her nails, bathing, taking care of her hair, etc, and at the end of the month he decides if he still wants to marry her. perhaps regina is trying to reference this and say that you don't know what love is until you see your loved one at their least attractive and you can truly appreciate them for who they are on the inside.

love this idea, never would have worked that out myself.

That is a very good translation of her thoughts! I also think that it means that some people go on with life, and they are dead inside, not knowing it. They see everything in front of them and keep passing it. Nothing seems to wake them. Hence: you don't know what love is til you see her standing there

you think you are alive but you are dead

you keep on driving in your car asleep on driving in your car

And then she kept saying "and drive" since the people who are dead inside just keep going on with...

i spent a very long time trying to figure out what this song (and the whole album "songs") is about. and then i realized. it's not about anything. it's a colossal joke, and it's directed right to the listener. "songs" is a little peek inside of regina's mind. we aren't supposed to understand it. it's musical rambling. and it is genius.

@hellodolly "when listening to this little disc, think you are in on a secret." -Songs disc info. (Unless the secret is that the album has no meaning)

Like many others, my favorite line is "You don't know what love is til you see her standing there" I think this line is about a woman who loved a man but he was on the fence about whether he loved her or not, but then somewhere he sees her and she's looking away and that's the moment he realizes he really loves her. This song is one of my favorites from Regina. There is not a song by her that I don't like.

this song reminds me of a grave yard and maybe the dead talking to each other thinking there not dead. they're like why are flowers growing its winter? they dont relize that people have put flowers on their graves.

also the part about driving in a car asleep a herse maybe? i dont have all the parts of the song totaly figured out but a funeral makes most sence to me, p.s regina's the best!

I think that this song is about sleeping through life with the imagery of one of those lonely, grey, overcast New York winter days that occur from time to time as the backdrop. (Anyone who's ever lived there from Sept. to around March knows what I mean.)

Maybe it's more directly about a guy who leaves to go to work in the morning and see's his wife whom he loves before he goes - and he feels that unique feeling of being someone different, but really, he's just another generic person off to their generic job in their generic car stuck in the same routine.

I always thought that the brrrrs at the end where supposed to be the sounds of the cars (maybe like the Jetsons cars lol).

I dunno really. Cool song, though!

i LOVE this song, i just pretty much regina all together. One minor correction w/ the lyrics "and people rush to be on time for work, they wrap themselves in wool and cloaks and hats and scarves" Im pretty sure its "and people rush to be on time. For warmth, they wrap themselves in wool and cloaks and hats and scarves" It just makes more sense

I really like this song, it's sad and gritty and a bit sultry all at the same time. Love how she shows off her vocal range, 'tis impressive. I've never thought it could be written from the POV of dead people, though, like muccamonster said. I like the interpretation of flowers growing in winter being flowers on graves, but I think the song as a whole is more like trying to 'drive away' from the hard dreariness of life.

that's just so beautiful.

When I heard this song, I thought of people. How we're all somebody and we all have unique thoughts and memories and experience and people that we love. Yet we mold all of ourselves together into one huge, dull being.
