Head Lyrics
If I only can't decide
The crystal eight ball's on the table
Thanks for nothing
Here's my only prayer
Thin air
Long ago
The other night
Far, far away
As the head falls off the table
Crashes to the floor and shatters
Dust and glass are blowing everywhere
Down there
Through the wall I hear you laughing
You're so special I don't like you
You will always be my only friend
No end
The crystal eight ball's on the table
Thanks for nothing
Here's my only prayer
Thin air
The other night
Far, far away
Crashes to the floor and shatters
Dust and glass are blowing everywhere
Down there
You're so special I don't like you
You will always be my only friend
No end

I think Curt is thinking back to when he and Cris used to trip together. They probably really had a crystal ball, and really knocked a porclein doll or something.
No Joke! was recored while Cris was really going of the deep end, and Curt was probably sick of Cris' shit, but knew they'd always be brothers.
This isn't exactly an 'interpretation' but for some reason, this song bring the image of an old castle on a hillside to my mind. I think it's the way the cello is used which is really perfect for this song. But certainly the reference is to the old 8-ball toy (do they still make those? I wonder). But I remember them from my childhood - it was a weird kind of toy though....I think this song is sort of reminiscent of childhood in some manner - like a "where did the time go?" sort of song. It's beautiful regardless - as so many Meat Puppets songs are! They seem to like juxtaposing conflicting or even contradicting ideas. A lot of irony goes on....for example: "You're so special / I don't like you / you will always be my only friend"....good stuff - makes for interesting listening!
