This isn't exactly an 'interpretation' but for some reason, this song bring the image of an old castle on a hillside to my mind. I think it's the way the cello is used which is really perfect for this song. But certainly the reference is to the old 8-ball toy (do they still make those? I wonder). But I remember them from my childhood - it was a weird kind of toy though....I think this song is sort of reminiscent of childhood in some manner - like a "where did the time go?" sort of song.
It's beautiful regardless - as so many Meat Puppets songs are!
They seem to like juxtaposing conflicting or even contradicting ideas. A lot of irony goes on....for example: "You're so special / I don't like you / you will always be my only friend"....good stuff - makes for interesting listening!
