All I know is that this song, in combination with Funeral for a Friend, is the greatest opening medley for a concert of any that I have ever been to. If you are not pumped up for a great show after listening to these opening 2 songs, then hopefully someone at the show has your dental records, because you are dead.

The title of this song is a personification of a broken relationship.
Think of it this way: Your dog gets hit by a car and you run out and pick him up from the street. He's dying and there's nothing you can do to save him, so you just hold him while he bleeds to death in your arms. Pretty sad, huh?
Elton is describing love as a living thing which has been mortally wounded, and all you can do is hold it for a little while until it dies. I didn't really understand the song until I went through a divorce after 20 years of marriage. Then it made perfect sense. I'm straight, but "Love lies bleeding" touches a nerve we can all relate to.

I like the song as a composite: listening to either "Funeral" or "Love Lies Bleeding" without the other is okay, but the listening experience is so much better with both.

Actually, the song IS called "Love Lies Bleeding". "Funeral for a friend" is the instrumental intro to this song. Check the album jacket
I remember when i bought "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" at the record store. I was exited, i had gotten hooked on Elton John in 1970 when "Madman" came out. I listened......and listened......this is a long song. I love the instremental, actually, more than the lyrics. Wasn't that big of a radio hit though ( I wonder why :)

This tune always brings a tear to my soul. Very long story, but was early 80s, I was the guitarist for a hair band way out in L.A. and got messed up with cocaine and girls, and my girlfriend was giving me fits, so I trashed the stage on my way to the bottom you might say...Anyway, this tune really brings that back outta me, love the song,but try to avoid hearing it,especially around others.
The bass in this song is absolutely awesome.
He is singing about selling his guitar because his girlfriend made him quit the band. That's what's bleeding in his hand, his true love. Hopefully he wishes she will come back round.
