What I Saw Lyrics

There's one room
There's one light
There's one night
In the fire
In the pain
In the wire
This from me
This one lie
That seems right
Time cant climb
It can't be
It can't see
I seem to be right
I fall down tonight
I go to hell to be what I sell
Failing again is such a welcome end
Can the end of today be more than tonight
Echoes of these far reaching sights
And the pain of knowing you should have tried
Give me your hands
And wel'll never die
This love song
It's what's wrong
It means jack
The time's right to be wrong
All night long
I feel good
I feel so far away
This is mine
It could be anyday
I saw what I saw
I call up a man
Distance is what gets me right in
I had a hand in everyone losing their place
Never must stop
It's stealing my heart
Moments to squeeze begging on their Knees
I know I'll never be right beyond tonight
Give me your hands
And we'll never die

This song is written about the death of River Pheonix and Frusciantes imapact upon his final moments. John was believed to have given river some heroin in a nightclub bathroom on the night of his death. River overdosed from this and in turn caused his death.

Fruscante feels the pain of his impact upon rivers death and this song is simply written to express his sorrow and pain. He admits that the song wont fix anything "this love song, its whats wrong, it means Jack" yet he writes it anyway.

Its fairly clear how john recalls the night and its impact

There's one room There's one light There's one night In the fire In the pain In the wire *(setting the scene - they are at a club called the viper room)

This from me This one lie That seems right Time cant climb It can't be It can't see I seem to be right I fall down tonight I go to hell to be what I sell *(john selling the heroin to river - clearly regretting his actions)

Failing again is such a welcome end Can the end of today be more than tonight Echoes of these far reaching sights *(expressing how monumental this night was - can the end of the world be any worse than what happened tonight?)

And the pain of knowing you should have tried Give me your hands And wel'll never die *(it is said that john actually fled the scene of the final moments when river was overdosing and having seizures outside the club - he knows he has done wrong and this clearly caused john an imense feeling of greif and pain. "give me your hands and we'll never die" maybe john was saying this to river as he began to freak out, or could be that john will join him in death and they will live forever in eternity

the rest is pretty self explanitory ;)

i think its about living in the present and not worrying about the future

Can the end of today be more than tonight Echoes of these far reaching sights And the pain of knowing you should have tried

this is regretting not doing something, which i feel right now.

Give me your hands And we'll never die

live in the present, dont worry about the future because it will soon be tomorrow

"And the pain of knowing you should have tried"

makes me think that it's to do with doing what you can before you run out of time, and try to do anything no matter how hard it is.

"Give me your hands And we'll never die"

I'm pretty sure that's just to do with teamwork, if you work together you can accomplish anything (like never dying?)

I think this whole album (inside of emptiness) is about the years of John's addiction to Heroin, either told in the midst of the addiction or looking back on it. It's seeking to describe strange feelings (immortality, manipulations in time, bizzaire philosophical thoughts) he brought away from those years.

i dont get it... but i love it!!! i love all of johns music, because there is meaning behind all of it, even if we dont get it. i love the "give me your hands and we'll never die" bit, its kind of romantic in a sadistic way. maybe its about his addiction and getting over it... giving it a go one night but it didnt work and thats why "Failing again is such a welcome end"... whatever, i love it!
