Soul Suckers Lyrics

Did you believe them
When they told you they discovered you
That everything is free
As long as you do what they tell you to
Think it's true

But nothing could be further from the truth, my love
Did you even listen
When they told you to change your name

Now nobody wants honesty when looking at a perfect frame
Play the game

But nothing could be further from the truth, my love
And nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world

Play it girl
Play it girl
Play it girl

Does it make you feel good
When they tell you what you want to hear
And after they suck all your soul
Well that's when they disappear
Disappear
Disappear for ever, and ever

Like a prince in your little fairy tale
And you will find it
When they put your soul on sale

But nothing could be further from the truth, my love
And nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world

Really poetic track, very lovely. the chorus gives me vibes from SEAL.

And nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world

my favourite line

Beautiful song - and I got the same Seal vibe as Stashews...

Quite subtle, yet powerful vocal from Amos - can't really make sense of the meaning of the lyrics though... does anypne have a clearer perspective?

I believe that this song is an indictment of the music industry. "when they told you they discovered you", "do what they tell you to", "change your name", "suck all your soul...[and] disappear". Easily a favorite on the album.

every time i hear this song i think of a young, intelligent, beautiful female prostitute who doesn't know what she's doing with a job like that. she's good for so much more.

it seems like, he's talking about a lover who feels she's inadequate, not enough for him. and all she can think about is her past, and the lyrics relive and retell her past (which probably wasn't a good one) and he's comforting her telling her she's worth more than her past has allowed her to be. i feel like the actual song is a reassurance that there's more to life than what people make it seem. she is the beauty in a wicked world..

that's what i think. Whatever it may be, everyone interprets music in a different way according to personal experiences. All in all, this song is MY beauty in my wicked world.

My Interpretation

this song is so powerful and meaningful to me. it perfectly describes a situation going on in my life, concerning one of my best friends changing her appearance and personality in order to gain popularity, acceptance, etc. and in turn, slowly losing me as her friend.

i believe this song could portray those who have lost themselves when trying to be someone their not. and then realizing, after some maturing, that their so called friends (the soul suckers) disappear forever. and when anyone tries to warn them of this happening, they don't want to listen to any voice of reason. (Nobody wants honesty when looking at a perfect frame. Play the game.)

and it really is a game. a contest. to see who can date the most people, have the most friends on facebook, say hi to the most people on the street, etc.

furthermore, the 'soul suckers' play the game to appease one another, telling their 'friends' what they want to hear. and it certainly does make them feel good, but in a negative way. it just feeds their ego.

"and nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world..." i think that is an amazing line. so much truth in that...people use beauty as a way to gain artificial attention, an attempt to send out this idea that they are better than everyone. but really, the most attractive people in the world are those who have a beautiful soul. a soul that is their own, true self. not some superficial illusion, a mask made of fear.

Beautiful take on this. Couldn't agree more.
