Crumble Lyrics
They've said it every year but this times it seems like
The end is near and i'm in line to see the light
How far does this black tunnel go
I got a car but the gas is running low
And as long as i've known the bumps and creeks of this house
It's starting to make the types of sounds that only comes from people's mouths
You cant tell me it's still settling
Built on an indian burial ground killing everything
The childhood scar on my chin is back again
That old jump over my own leg dance move has to end
I've seen better days in my night terrors
I was a bike messenger without a bike and i would write letters
Ask directions to your whereabouts
Before the slow walk the rest of the show-offs were pealing out
To many hares only one tortise
Thats why I left this city, too fast paced for this HO-HUM TAURUS
By the time i developed the pictures
They're as blurry as my memory of constant life fixtures
If distance is a girl's best friend
Tell them bitches in the rough who think that love comes with DIAMONDS
Slave labor, you made me work for what I couldnt have
Diamonds cut, but coal burns and nothing lasts forever
Dont know why I bothered saving any of your letters, they're just aged paper
Crumbling
Slave labor, you made me work for what I couldnt have
Diamonds cut, the cold burns and nothing lasts
Wonder why I saved your urn of ashes
The end is near and i'm in line to see the light
How far does this black tunnel go
I got a car but the gas is running low
And as long as i've known the bumps and creeks of this house

The rest of the lyrics:
I've got an insecurity box for your mail Tracing the name on the return address as if it was made of braille Pretended it was your finger but careful to not break a nail The one that sealed the coffin shut. When it opened caused a paper trail But since then I buried your dead sea scrolls And emptied my head of these old trivial memories that i seem to hold Now you're a foot note with cement shoes In case you wonder what that sinking feeling has been ever since I left you.
Thanks!
Thanks!
i dont think its his childhood thats coming back to haunt him. i think its the letters. in my opinion this song is about going back and reading the love letters that were sent to him by an ex lover back when they were together and as he rereads them all of the pain comes back. the letters are also the ashes in the urn that he talks about at the very end.
I'm pretty sure it's "ho-hum tourist" not ho-hum taurus. Sage Francis is an Aries.
I think he was talking about a car... Ho-hum Taurus... only cuz he mentioned he has no gas for his car earlier.

Tourist makes more sense with the rest of the line, given that he talks about leaving a city. The imagery of that analogy, btw, is beautiful. As a tourist, you only see the beautiful parts of the city, which in turn skews your views of it as something fantastic. If you live there though, you tend to see its flaws.
Also, thanks to richardm82 for the rest of the lyrics. Very helpful!
Great song, these lyrics are missing the bit where it all goes a bit extreme, though.
The first part seems to be talking about the apocolypse, and this line:
"And as long as i've known the bumps and creeks of this house It's starting to make the types of sounds that only comes from people's mouths"
seems to be another reference to a haunted house (there were quite a few on Personal Journals). One can only assume he grew up or lives in a house that's haunted.
Later on he appears to be talking to someone, and he seems to be thinking everything is a bit bleak and hopeless, but I'm not sure what it's really about.
He seems to be talking about someone who did him wrong/lead him on, possibly a girl.
Really, like all of his songs, there's a hell of a lot going on and it's impossible to understand it all.
I think he is talking about his childhood and maybe how it has affected him. Perhaps the indian burial ground was abusive parents or a bad childhood thing.. And I think he also makes a reference to a girlfriend that left him. I am just guessing here.
sounds like she lead him on hardout, "If distance is a girl's best friend Tell them bitches in the rough who think that love comes with DIAMONDS Slave labor, you made me work for what I couldnt have" to me it sounds like it was a long distance relationship hence the letter writing, or just a relationship where they didnt see much of each other. But overall when he says "you made me work for what i couldnt have" it makes me think that she never put in as much effort as he did
