So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Plain talking (plain talking)
Take us so far (take us so far)
Broken down cars (broken down cars)
Like strung out old stars (like strung out old stars)
Plain talking (plain talking)
Served us so well (served us so well)
We traveled through hell (traveled through hell)
Know how we felt (oh how we felt)
Lift me up, lift me up
Higher now ama
Lift me up, lift me up
Higher now ama
Lift me up, lift me up
Higher now ama
Lift me up, lift me up
Higher now ama
Plain talking (plain talking)
Making us bold (making us bold)
So strung out and cold (strung out and cold)
I'm feeling so old (feeling so old)
Plain talking (plain talking)
Has ruined us now (ruined us now)
You never know how (you never know how)
Sweeter than thou (sweeter than thou)
Lift me up, lift me up
Higher now ama

this is really catchy - no idea what it is about though..
Hum...I don't agree with the lyrics.... I think it's "plain talking" instead of " blind talking" and "Higher now am I" instead of "Aiah Nouwamba" !!! In the video, some of the lyrics appear on the wall behind moby....
I agree with vehuiah, those lyrics aren't all right. It is defintely 'Plain Talking' at the beginning, but I seem to hear the chorus as "Higher Now Upper"....... And it doesn't start with 'Like stronger old stars', but with plain talking.
Anyway, this song is really catchy!
"Higher now upper" !!! Yes it sounds right !! How can we edit the lyrics ???
lyrics edited :-D...
Awesome song..
I think it's about native americans, I think the "Higher Now Upper"-part sounds a little native american.
I found another lyric site and it says that he sings "Higher, now I'm up". It sounds more correct and makes more sence. How do you edit?
Yer that does sound more correct... Lyrics edited.. Only the submitter, admins and moderators can edit lyrics.

i hear "like strung out old stars" - tell me if im crazy?
i listen to this song pretty much every time i get in my car... it just does something for me. hard to describe. it's akin to seeing johnny depp with eyeliner or something -- goosebumps and shivers :p
yes, im obsessive
I think too that it's "strung-out old stars". Also, when you listen carefully, he sings "we know how WE FELL (oh how WE FELL)"
"Talking" might mean "creating". The term Logos (Word) in Greek philosophy denotes the divine tool of creation. When we name things we differentiate between them, thus becoming aware of their separate identities and bringing them into existence.
When creation becomes disharmonious we fall and heaven changes to hell.
I think this song is a wake-up call: The time has come to rise from the ashes.
