Second Coming Lyrics
I couldn't tell if the bells were getting louder
The songs they ring I finally recognize
I only know hell is getting hotter
The devil's getting smarter all the time
And it would be nice to walk upon the water
To talk again to angels on my side
Time is getting closer
I read it on a poster
Fanatical exposers on corners prophecy
It would be nice to walk upon the water
To talk again to angels at my side
I just come back to show you all my words are golden
so have no gods before me, I'm the light
The songs they ring I finally recognize
I only know hell is getting hotter
The devil's getting smarter all the time
And it would be nice to walk upon the water
To talk again to angels on my side
I read it on a poster
Fanatical exposers on corners prophecy
To talk again to angels at my side
I just come back to show you all my words are golden
so have no gods before me, I'm the light

This song was recorded in the early 1970's and a prelude to the Ballad of Dwight Fry. It appears the 2 songs need to be examined together. My interpretation is that a homeless urban character is falling into a prophetic awakening which is perceived by others as mental illness. In fact, the character is given a 6th sense and forsees the 2nd Coming of Christ. I saw another "post" stating AC became a Christian in 1999. He was a struggling Christian for many years prior to that. I believe this song - a smokingly powerful song musically as well as lyrically - is evidence of Alice's inner-convictions when he was in his early 20's.
@Beardawg What?? This song is so obviously NOT about J. C., it's written from the perspective of Satan, who was a fallen angel who used to have angels walking side by side with him, he also jealously says it would be nice to walk upon the water, like Jesus did, so why would J. C. be saying he'd like to walk upon the water?? Sure A. C. says he re-captured his Christianity, you forget, his dad was a Baptist minister & A. C. grew up in the church, Baptist doctrine says, "once saved, always saved," so he didn't just become...

C. grew up in the church, Baptist doctrine says, "once saved, always saved," so he didn't just become a professing Christian at some point in his career. The song is Indeed great, but not because there's some mysterious analogy to Jesus...go back & re-read the lyrics & consider what I write.
Interesting, Beardawg. I'd never even considered that it could be directly related to Ballad of Dwight Fry.
When I looked up the lyrics, I thought it was about Jesus, in exile on Earth for some reason. He's still driven to protect the human race from the Devil, but he can't. Or it could be about a mentally ill person who gets the delusion that he/she is the reincarnation of Jesus. (Funnily enough, I'm not offended by this, despite the fact that I am a Christian myself...maybe because there isn't any direct bashing of the religion at all in it.)
Second Coming may be about the Antichrist.

@Sandwich-Masta I admit it could be from the perspective of a much-deluded Dwight Frye, but you cannot deny the lyrics sound more like they're coming from Satan. Course I know all the true believers are going to downvotes my suggestion.

What does it mean? The title of the song is "Second Coming" and one of the lines says: "I just come back to show you all my words are golden So have no gods before me, I'm the light ." What more do we need to know?
I’ve always taken Second Coming, along with The Ballad of Dwight Fry, and Sun Arise, as a trilogy. Second Coming is the character (Alice?) as a street corner prophet. The man is viewed as insane, and sent to an asylum (The Ballad of Dwight Fry), where he breaks out, but is soon recaptured. Eventually he is rehabilitated and released (Sun Arise). Of all the songs on Love It To Death, these three are the only ones that segue into each other without a break. So that’s my take.
