MANNY: This is a song about the Bayou (strange since CCR members were from CA). The Shoefly/Dragonfly references are literal - just a person enjoying cool water but wanting the bugs to go away. As for the "Flat Car" and "Cross Tie Walkers" lyrics - this refers to railroad workers in camps - in the 1930's. They rode flat cars on the rail lines and the workers installed railroad ties after they were unloaded from the flat cars - these workers were called "Cross-Tie Walkers." |

This song was recorded in the early 1970's and a prelude to the Ballad of Dwight Fry. It appears the 2 songs need to be examined together. My interpretation is that a homeless urban character is falling into a prophetic awakening which is perceived by others as mental illness. In fact, the character is given a 6th sense and forsees the 2nd Coming of Christ. I saw another "post" stating AC became a Christian in 1999. He was a struggling Christian for many years prior to that. I believe this song - a smokingly powerful song musically as well as lyrically - is evidence of Alice's inner-convictions when he was in his early 20's. |

I learned to play this song in my Classic Rock cover band and it is a very cool rocking tune. I am a Cooper fan and I'm hoping someone can decipher the 1st 2 verses for me. It appears on its face to be general Cooper references to crazy homeless people who are dismissed without a thought, but might in fact be Prophets, etc. The 2nd verse seems to be an extension of the first, but the "shadows moving" has me fooled. Is this a reference to dream sequences of Jesus or a Prophet forseeing his death? Just looking for anyone who may have insight. |
