You know I'm around you
I woundn't be if I didn't love you
I'm going to run through you
You know you're quite a character
It goes that I haven't got a care
When we float down the river
I wonder will I lose you
When we roam through a blizzard
We'll joke and have another cry
I hope I'm not the other guy
We'll never scale those heights again
We've lost our daugther
Let's plan to hide from all our friends
In silent waters
Be careful of what you are
What you see is just a small part
You must look for yourself in others
And all the places that you go
You see that they are part of you
I want to again be holding hands
With you underwater
And couldn't we get a second chance
To go back and start over
I was thinking before
That it was all my fault
We Dropped the baton
Sunday waves and makes faces at us all the time
And I'm wondering what I call mine
Sunday waves and makes faces all the time
And I'm wondering what I call mine

I like this song a lot. Seems to be about a relationship the songwriter cares deeply about. I'm confused about the brief reference to losing their daughter.

favorite line: "Sunday waves and makes faces all the time"

great song. it's most probably about a relationship with a person he cared a lot for; and he probably lost it ("And couldn't we get a second chance to go back and start over").. about the daughter reference.. maybe it's not actually a daughter so to speak, it's just a metaphor for something else like their relationship, since he said they lost their daughter. my favorite line is: and i want to again be holding hands with you underwater"...

i hinstley don't think that it's to do w/ a reationship at all. i don'k know why but something inside me makes me want to just sit there and think of nothing but inly john. i wish i could share more of what i think it's about but it seems to be traped somewhere in me. i haven't listened to this album in ages i really have to get it bck off my friend. anyway instesd of me blabering on i'll try to tell you

it's like when you first meet your first spirit or not your first like when you get to know a little more about them and you feel them around you it's like their around you, hence the name of the song, and you feel either close or tight or something like that i don't know. ah the relationship stuff could be the relation he had w/ the spirits.i don't know if i ever figure it out i'll tell you but you're prob right about the relationship stuff

This song makes me so sad. The end But the guitar vibe makes it feel like he's dealing with it well? If that makes sense. LIke he's accepted it and it's okay and now he's just looking back Fav line 'I want to again be holding hands / With you underwater'

    @ i love JF

i actually see what you're saying. i think a lot of john's songs have that illusion of being about a relationship but at their core, really aren't. what you described sounds more like john.

of course, it could be a mix of things. song meanings are rarely simple.

    @ Wack_Strings

i read about how it was written while he was reading an aleister crowell biography, but i don't know enough about that/him to have more information.

    My Interpretation

    My view is this:

It's a song about the essential essence of life.

/You know I'm around you I woundn't be if I didn't love you I'm going to run through you You know you're quite a character It goes that I haven't got a care/

This is 'the essential nature' talking and this continues, to converse with the mind: /When we float down the river I wonder will I lose you When we roam through a blizzard/

'Will I lose my you, my mind?'

Then it changes, to the mind talking:

/I hope I'm not the other guy We'll never scale those heights again We've lost our daugther Let's plan to hide from all our friends In silent waters/

The song then switches between the two personas for the remainder:

/Be careful of what you are What you see is just a small part You must look for yourself in others And all the places that you go You see that they are part of you/

This bit is great. Be careful of what you think of yourself as, your perception is narrow, you must see that which is of all existence, we're all the same energy/existence/being.

/I want to again be holding hands With you underwater And couldn't we get a second chance To go back and start over I was thinking before That it was all my fault We Dropped the baton/

Mind (an input into your perception) dominates Being (nature, life, essence, perception) in the majority of mind holding perceptions, as a natural course (it's why we have minds, they've been useful evolutionarily for this reason), to return underwater (before birth, in the womb) is to return to the state before this dominance occurred. Before, the mind was thinking that it was it's fault (the mind judges, perception sees), but now it believes that 'we' (both) dropped the baton. The perception, or being, fooled by the ruse of the mind, is also at fault, making way for all the hate, anger, jealousy, dependence, need, vengence etc in the world that mind goes on to create through the being's submission to mind.

/Sunday waves and makes faces at us all the time And I'm wondering what I call mine/

Sunday is the day of worship in the Christian faith which pervades American society. I think these lines are referring to religion and John's mind is pondering what it calls his set of beliefs.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
